About The Position

The Department of Anesthesiology at Emory University School of Medicine is seeking a board eligible/board certified anesthesiologist to serve as the Division Chief of their Anesthesiology Preoperative Clinics (APCs). This role involves leading the clinical operations of the APCs, focusing on enhancing operational efficiencies, improving patient satisfaction, and ensuring high-quality, cost-effective healthcare. The position requires active engagement in clinical care, research, and education, aligning with Emory's tripartite mission. The Division Chief will manage human and financial resources, develop staff training programs, and collaborate with various stakeholders to optimize patient flow and experience. This faculty position offers 20% nonclinical time for administrative duties and requires regular presence at both the EUH APC and EUHM APC.

Requirements

  • Must be an active applicant for a faculty appointment within the department.
  • ≥ 7 years of experience working in a preoperative clinic.
  • ≥ 3 years of leadership in preoperative clinics/preoperative medicine.
  • M.D., D.O., or foreign equivalent.
  • Eligible to apply for a medical license in the state of Georgia.
  • American Board of Anesthesiology board certified/eligible.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting faculty development and promotion processes.
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with departmental leadership on recruitment and professional growth initiatives.
  • Demonstrated experience participating in performance evaluation and committee activities.

  • Experience with OB anesthesia a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Aid and advise the Chair and Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs in developing and maintaining clinical operations of the Department’s APCs.
  • Participate in professional activities and organizations to maintain knowledge of current trends, practices, and developments in preoperative medicine.
  • Continuously evaluate and update screening protocols and clinical practice within the APCs to reflect current best practices.
  • Deploy best practices across the Department’s APCs to ensure consistency in practice and process.
  • Lead efforts to streamline patient visits to enhance patient satisfaction and improve operational efficiency.
  • Establish and revise productivity metrics for APC clinicians.
  • Study and revise workflow of clinicians, nurses, and administrative staff for optimal patient experience.
  • Evaluate and implement electronic pre-screening tools.
  • Engage with Surgeons, their office staff, the OR scheduling office, and other relevant stakeholders to promote a seamless process for arranging APC visits and resolving operational issues.
  • Coordinate in-services as necessary to maintain engagement of stakeholders.
  • Participate in budget discussions related to staffing and setting appointment numbers per provider per shift.
  • Ensure sufficient clinician staffing (Faculty, APP, Trainee) to support patient visits.
  • Manage the section’s financial performance.
  • Serve as direct clinical supervisor of the Section’s Chief APP, evaluating performance and identifying goals/objectives.
  • Serve as direct clinical supervisor of each hospital’s physician APC site lead for their APC practice effort.
  • Hold regular meetings with APC faculty and APPs to educate about updates and identify challenges.
  • Serve as APC Clinicians’ representative to relevant facility teams.
  • Liaise with EVS/materials management regarding cleanliness, stocking, and equipment delivery.
  • Educate all members of the APC team about Joint Commission Guidelines and ensure compliance.
  • Participate in capital budget planning/submission.
  • Represent the Section on Committees related to APC Clinical Operations, physical plant/facilities, TJC inspection readiness, APC efficiency, and other ad hoc committees/task forces.
  • Work with the Administrator and Office of Compliance to assure compliance.
  • Contribute to the formulation of policy and strategy of the Department.
  • Prepare and distribute accurate and timely financial projections, assessments, analyses, reports, plans, and solutions.
