About The Position

Salem Public Schools is seeking a passionate and dedicated Districtwide String Orchestra Teacher for the 2026-2027 school year. This is a full-time, itinerant position responsible for teaching music education to students in grades 6-12. The teacher will develop a program that fosters students' enjoyment, appreciation, and performance of music through various experiences including singing, moving, playing instruments, and listening. The role involves collaborating with staff to improve music instruction and engaging students in a standards-based music program. Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree (Required)
  • Required Massachusetts teaching certification/licensure in Music
  • Minimum of 1-year teaching experience and working in an urban public school or charter school setting preferred
  • Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) Endorsement (Required within 1-year of start date)
  • Current authorization to work in the United States

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s Degree (Preferred)
  • Proficiency with technology (blended learning, teacher/family communication suites (Remind preferred), Google G-Suite Apps, etc.) desirable.
  • Second language (Spanish and/or Portuguese) proficiency a plus.
  • Bilingual candidates and candidates of color strongly encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Teach music education to pupils in grades 6-12.
  • Assist staff in improving and appreciating standards-based music instruction.
  • Develop a program to help students grow in their enjoyment, appreciation, and performance of music.
  • Select repertoire, rehearse, and conduct students in the districtwide string orchestra program.
  • Provide small group lessons and full ensemble rehearsals.
  • Instruct students in grades 4-12 (exact schedule and grade levels TBD).
  • Teach additional non-performance based electives as the schedule allows.
  • Create a safe and welcoming learning environment with engaging lessons and activities.
  • Establish positive relationships with students and families and communicate regularly about student progress.
  • Collaborate with the instrumental music team to plan and deliver school-based and districtwide concerts.
  • Maintain care and responsibility for school-owned music, instruments, and equipment.
  • Make minor adjustments and request repairs to instruments.
  • Evaluate each pupil’s musical growth, performance, and musical understanding.
  • Select appropriate music, books, and instructional aides.
  • Requisition musical instruments and instructional supplies.
  • Cooperate with Building Principal and staff in providing musical programs for school assemblies, open house, parent meetings, and seasonal programs.
