About The Position

Provide a preventative health services program for students, which will enable the district to meet the requirements of federal, state, and local regulations.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of first aid and emergency medical procedures
  • Knowledge of school health programs, community health resources, and state and county health regulations.
  • Skill in providing nursing care and interventions for children and adolescents.
  • Ability to assess student health needs and work with families, healthcare providers, and community agencies
  • Ability to lead, problem-solve, and collaborate effectively with staff and administrators
  • Able to coordinate and delegate nursing-related tasks to school staff, to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures and to work cooperatively and professionally with others
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately.
  • Special preparation and/or experience as a volunteer or paid nurse in a school district setting.
  • Previous experience with at-risk youth.
  • Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse issued by the Oregon State Board of Nursing.
  • A Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited school of nursing or a Registered Nurse with a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in another field.
  • A valid Oregon driver’s license and reliable transportation for on the job travel.
  • Ability to read English and comprehend complex technical language.
  • Ability to write memos and correspondence in English.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-to-one small group situations.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to apply common sense to carry out detailed, but basic, written or oral instructions in English.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and establish and effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisor(s), staff, students, parents and community.

Responsibilities

  • Advise and assist district personnel in planning, organizing, and coordinating the district health service program for students.
  • Provide building level nursing services as scheduled.
  • Arrange for group screening as needed for vision hearing, scoliosis, contagious or chronic diseases using district staff volunteers.
  • Following a student referral evaluates and provides appropriate follow-up and recommendations to staff and parents.
  • Act as a resource to district staff for information on health issues.
  • Coordinate student immunization to meet state and federal legal requirements and assist staff in maintaining accurate records.
  • Assist building personnel in maintaining first aid supplies.
  • Review and file district student accident report forms.
  • Serve as a member of the district safety committee.
  • Implement and oversee a district program to ensure the prevention of the spread of bloodborne pathogens.
  • Develop health protocols for disabled students for feeding, suctioning, positioning and other medical concerns.
  • Provide required health room assistant training, Glucagon, Epinephrine and medication administration classes, etc.
  • Assess the health needs of referred students.
  • Provide direct services to referred students.
  • Develop, write and maintain individualized health management plans to support student health and safety.
  • Assist teachers in integrating the health management plan into the educational and related services program.
  • Provide consultation to special education supervisors, teachers principals, school support staff, medical personnel, and parents regarding the nature, scope and intensity of services that will meet the student's identified health needs.
  • Act as liaison between parents, teachers, community agencies, district school nurses, and medical providers, as needed, to plan for student health needs.
  • Participate as a member of the multidisciplinary team and make appropriate recommendations regarding student's individual health/education plans (IEP) and 504s for students with health needs.
  • Consult with school teams regarding implementation of accommodations in the health management plan.
  • Contribute in designated meetings directed by program director/supervisor.
  • Contribute to a positive and productive work environment.
  • Delegate nursing services to appropriate personnel for individual students.
  • Maintains the integrity of confidential information relating to a student, family, colleague, or district patron, and uses or relays academic, social, or personal information only in the course of performing assigned responsibilities and in the best interest of the individuals involved.
  • Follows all laws, District policies, rules, regulations, memos, announcements, and reasonable requests by proper authority.
  • Adheres to the same ethical standards as in Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC) Standards for Competent and Ethical Educators.
  • Maintains regular attendance at work and work activities, and is punctual in meeting deadlines, attending meetings, and following schedules.
  • Authorize exclusion and readmission of students with communicable diseases according to Yamhill County Communicable Disease Guidelines.
  • Maintain current first-aid/CPR certification.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
