About The Position

This is a temporary position through the 2025-26 school year. The District Resource Officer - Night Patrol is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of school district properties during night hours. This role involves patrolling school grounds, investigating suspicious activities, responding to emergencies, and maintaining order. The position requires effective communication, the ability to handle tense situations, and physical capability to restrain individuals if necessary. The officer will work closely with staff, students, and law enforcement to maintain a secure environment.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or equivalent.
  • Two years of experience in security, law enforcement, and/or in a closely-related law enforcement field; or two years of youth intervention experience.
  • Valid first aid and CPR certification or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to obtain a Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 30 days of hire.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member.
  • Ability to demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Maintain acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to communicate with a variety of people using different means, e.g. cell phone, e-mail, radio.
  • Ability to utilize enforcement tools to include handcuffs, pepper-spray, baton, tasers, and hand guns.
  • Ability to maintain control of tense and potentially dangerous situations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain strong and effective working relationships with staff, students, the public, and law enforcement and fire department personnel.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to demonstrate interview skills.
  • Ability to perform the physical aspects of the job to include physically restraining students or adults.
  • Ability to operate a computer and use Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel, GroupWise, Outlook, Word and utilize on-line reporting system effectively.
  • Ability to communicate security and safety procedures to district staff, parents, and students.
  • Requires substantial visual concentration and physical dexterity.
  • Required to work outdoors in inclement weather.
  • Required to be accessible during off-hours in order to return to work for emergencies.
  • May be required to meet deadlines or work extra and irregular hours.
  • Regular attendance to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the position to achieve program goals and outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol school district properties using a district vehicle, observing activities and ensuring doors, windows, and gates are properly closed and locked.
  • Secure areas found unlocked or open.
  • Provide assistance to staff, students, or citizens as needed.
  • Investigate suspicious activities, question individuals, interview witnesses, and involve law enforcement as necessary.
  • Evict unauthorized persons from school facilities and disperse groups to maintain order and safety.
  • Apprehend or assist in the apprehension of individuals committing or suspected of committing crimes on school property, including chasing and physically controlling suspects.
  • Conduct lawful investigations and provide appropriate documentation.
  • Communicate appropriately and effectively with distraught, angry, or hostile individuals, remaining calm under pressure.
  • Accurately assess emergency situations and prioritize and coordinate responses.
  • Monitor building conditions during patrols, call for emergency response to fire, and alert maintenance staff concerning issues like broken pipes or electrical problems.
  • Communicate with maintenance staff concerning repairs needed due to vandalism or forced entry.
  • Be constantly aware of personal safety, risk of attack with weapons, and confrontational situations.
  • Make effective decisions in a thoughtful and timely fashion.
  • Physically intervene and/or restrain students and/or non-students in a safe manner when necessary.
  • Maintain a patrol log and complete and submit written incident reports of criminal, security, and safety activity in a timely fashion to the supervisor.
  • Provide information to building administrators and building operators concerning unsecured areas noted on the patrol log.
  • Maintain confidential information as appropriate.
  • Interact and work with local law enforcement and school district officials to ensure the safety of campuses and individual students.
  • Assist in the coordination of response to national or natural emergencies as directed by the district.
  • Respond to medical emergencies, which may result in exposure to danger, risk, or infectious disease.
  • Refer drug, alcohol, and tobacco incidents to proper law enforcement authorities and district administration for discipline and/or intervention and recovery programs.
  • Patrol buildings and grounds after the school day and at school events.
  • Observe student activity for substance abuse, theft, vandalism, or other illegal activities.
  • Prevent unauthorized access to school grounds by intruders; write, deliver, and document trespass notices.
  • Maintain proficient skills in security techniques and attend and successfully complete mandatory training as directed by the district.
  • Gather information on gang/criminal activities and forward to the district safety office.
  • Provide information to staff and students concerning property protection and safety measures.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with students, staff, and outside agencies.
  • Ensure proper parking regulations are followed and violators are properly notified.
  • Observe and monitor students and visitors entering and leaving campus.
  • Greet and assist authorized visitors by providing directions and assistance.
  • Maintain safety and security in parking lots, including removing illegally parked vehicles and directing traffic.
  • Provide security services for student activities and events.
  • Perform other tasks and assume other responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.
