About The Position

This examination is for eligible Fire Captains seeking promotion to District Fire Chief. It establishes an eligibility list from which candidates may be selected to proceed to the Assessment Center portion of the promotional process, as outlined in the current collective bargaining agreement. Candidates who pass the written examination, up to a maximum of the top 20, may continue to the Assessment Center.

Registration is online from November 6, 2026, at 7:45 AM through November 21, 2026, at 4:30 PM. The registration link will be emailed to eligible candidates at their city email address. A two-hour written examination is scheduled for December 16, 2026, at 9:00 AM at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, 900 East Market, Room 305. Photo identification is required. Cell phones, electronic devices, backpacks, books, food, and drinks are not permitted in the examination room.

The five-day review period, excluding weekends and holidays, runs from December 17, 2026, at 7:45 AM through December 23, 2026, at 4:30 PM. Review location information will be emailed to candidates who take the examination. The review will be held during regular COSA business hours, excluding weekends and holidays. Photo identification is required, and cell phones, study materials, backpacks, and personal items are not permitted in the review room.

Requirements

• Must be a Fire Captain and meet the eligibility criteria in the current collective bargaining agreement and/or applicable provisions of Chapter 143 of the Texas Local Government Code.
• Must receive a passing grade on the written examination to be eligible to continue to the Assessment Center; advancement is limited to a maximum of the top 20 candidates.
• Photo identification is required for the written examination and examination review.
