About The Position

Idaho Power is looking for a Distribution II or Senior – Large Load to join their Planning, Engineering, and Construction team in Boise, Idaho. This role plays a critical part in serving communities across Idaho and Oregon by providing safe, reliable, and affordable energy. The position is based at Idaho Power’s downtown Boise location, offering flexible schedules and the opportunity to work up to 40% remotely. Relocation assistance may also be provided. The Large Load Distribution Designer II or works with Idaho Power’s Economic and Community Development Group to coordinate, plan, and design line extensions and infrastructure rebuilding for overhead and underground power lines. They collaborate with internal and external customers, including contractors and developers, to understand needs, resolve conflicts, and communicate policies, procedures, rates, tariffs, and cost information related to line design. The role involves designing complex line routes and creating project quotes based on customer requirements and company standards. A Senior Distribution Designer also trains and mentors junior designers on estimation, mapping, and design best practices.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of new business operations, emergency response, and unplanned maintenance core processes.
  • Knowledge of electrical distribution facilities, operating and protective systems.
  • Knowledge of line construction methods, materials, standards, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of financial requirements including Rule H, regulations, and rules.
  • Knowledge of surveying practices, legal property descriptions, permitting requirements, work order reconciliation, and applicable safety rules.
  • Professional communication skills including verbal, written, and telephone etiquette.
  • Customer focus, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Proficiency with personal computers including commonly used applications, and AutoCAD/AUD.
  • Math and algebra skills.
  • Organization and project management skills.
  • Ability to read and understand construction drawings and plat, feeder, and work order maps.
  • Ability to assist with performing land and construction surveying and preparing easements with appropriate legal description.
  • Ability to gather information, organize, schedule, and design distribution facilities.
  • Ability to calculate voltage drop/flicker, fault current, clearance, conductor sag, and tension requirements.
  • Ability to read and comprehend digital construction drawings.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Distribution Designer II: 4 years of experience in electric utility line design OR Experience as a Journeyman Lineman with 1 year of design experience OR 2 ½ years of experience as an Idaho Power Distribution Designer I with a successful promotional assessment OR Is currently an Idaho Power Journeyman Lineman.
  • Senior Distribution Designer: Successful completion of Distribution Designer I and II program requirements and assessments AND A minimum of 2 ½ years as a Distribution Designer II.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Must obtain First Aid/CPR card within 90 days.

Nice To Haves

  • Distribution Designer II Preferred: 4 years of electric utility line design experience.
  • Distribution Designer II Preferred: 1 ½ years as a Distribution Designer II.
  • Senior Distribution Designer Preferred: Utility distribution construction background.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate, plan, and design line extensions and infrastructure rebuilding for overhead and underground power lines.
  • Meet with internal and external customers, including contractors and developers, to determine needs.
  • Negotiate conflicts or clarify issues with customers.
  • Communicate policies and procedures for line design options, rates, tariffs, and cost information.
  • Design complex line routes and create project quotes based on customer needs and company practices.
  • Train and mentor Distribution Designer I's and II's on processes and best practices for estimating, mapping, and design (for Senior role).
  • Perform vehicle inspections.
  • Determine when to use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Work overtime at supervisor's discretion.
