Display Optical Engineer

Apple•Cupertino, CA

About The Position

As part of Apple’s Display Technologies group, the Display Optical Engineer will contribute to the design, fabrication, and implementation of display components for Apple devices, from initial concept through mass production. The role focuses on optical simulation, design, and validation for next-generation displays and future display technologies. The engineer will develop display-module optical designs and preliminary specifications, characterize prototypes and manufacturing build units, and create image-quality metrics and specifications. The role also involves investigating optical failures and developing mitigations, as well as developing optical component technologies for future display implementation. The position calls for collaboration with multifunctional teams and overseas suppliers, and may require overseas travel.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and three years of experience in physics, optics, or a related field.
  • Expertise in optics, physics, optical components (such as lenses, films, or thin-film coatings), image processing, machine learning, or computer science.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as MATLAB or Python and statistical tools such as JMP to solve practical engineering problems.
  • Strong analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective verbal, written, and presentation communication skills in English.
  • Ability to travel overseas.

Nice To Haves

  • Broad engineering background encompassing display technologies, optical simulation (such as LightTools or Speos), and electrical engineering.
  • Hands-on experience in mass-production consumer electronics or display-related systems.
  • Experience working closely with multifunctional teams and overseas suppliers.

Responsibilities

  • Develop display-module optical designs and preliminary specifications, including justifications.
  • Characterize prototypes and perform large-scale data analysis on manufacturing build units.
  • Develop image-quality metrics and corresponding specifications.
  • Lead failure analysis for display optical issues and develop mitigations.
  • Develop optical component technologies for future display implementation.
  • Collaborate with multifunctional teams and overseas suppliers.
