Display Optical Engineer

Apple•Cupertino, CA

About The Position

As part of Apple’s Display Technologies group, the Display Optical Engineer will work on the optical simulation, design, and validation of next-generation displays. The role involves developing future display technologies for Apple products, from initial concept through mass production, including products such as Apple Watch, iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The engineer will design display-module optics and preliminary specifications, characterize prototypes and analyze manufacturing-build data, develop image-quality metrics and specifications, investigate optical failures and mitigations, and develop optical component technologies for future display implementations. The role works with multifunctional teams and overseas suppliers and may require overseas travel.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 10 years of relevant industry experience.
  • Expertise in optics, physics, optical components (such as lenses, films, and thin-film coatings), image processing, machine learning, or computer science.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as MATLAB or Python and statistical tools such as JMP for practical engineering problems.
  • Strong analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication and presentation skills in English.
  • Ability to travel overseas.
  • Broad engineering background encompassing display technologies, optical simulation (such as LightTools or Speos), and electrical engineering.
  • Hands-on experience in mass-production consumer electronics or display-related systems.
  • Experience working closely with multifunctional teams and overseas suppliers.

Responsibilities

  • Design display-module optics and develop preliminary specifications with supporting justifications.
  • Characterize prototypes and perform large-set data analysis on manufacturing build units.
  • Develop metrics to quantify image quality and create corresponding specifications.
  • Lead failure analysis for display optical issues and develop mitigations.
  • Develop optical component technologies for future display implementations.
