About The Position

The Dispatcher, Transportation Services role is responsible for dispatching bus drivers and vehicles for various transportation needs, including regular routes, special trips, and extra-duty transportation. This position involves communicating schedule changes, monitoring routes, coordinating substitute drivers, and maintaining accurate records. The role requires knowledge of the geographic area, relevant regulations, and the ability to handle high-volume communications and stressful situations effectively.

Requirements

  • Associates degree from an accredited institution.
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.
  • Knowledge of the geographic area.
  • Knowledge of regulations, policies, and procedures for the functional area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA, Public Records, Sunshine Law, FERPA, and other laws/regulations related to student and employee privacy, public information, and records retention.
  • Basic computer skills including familiarity with office equipment, routing software or databases.
  • Ability to read maps and routes.
  • Ability to handle a high volume of communications in a short amount of time.
  • Ability to perform job duties calmly and clearly via two-way radio and telephone in stressful situations requiring quick action.
  • Ability to professionally and effectively respond to customer needs and requests for service or assistance.
  • Ability to work the afternoon and PM shift.

Nice To Haves

  • Valid Florida commercial Class B (CDL) driver’s license with School Bus (S) endorsement.
  • Three years of transportation, school-bus driver, or dispatching experience in a school transportation system.

Responsibilities

  • Dispatch bus drivers and vehicles for regular transportation routes, special trips (field trips, athletics), and extra-duty transportation.
  • Communicate schedule or route changes, delays, or special instructions to drivers, schools, coaches, or other district staff.
  • Monitor bus routes for timely departures and arrivals; track status of buses during routes.
  • Assist supervisors and other dispatchers with coordination of substitute drivers or relief assignments when regular drivers are unavailable due to illness, absence, or route changes.
  • Obtain and relay factual information and assist bus operators in emergency situations.
  • Maintain accurate transportation and trip records: vehicle usage logs, driver assignments, communication logs, trip records, substitute driver lists, etc.
  • Comply with governmental, department, and Board regulations, policies, and procedures in performance of job duties.
  • Forward route and safety concerns as reported by bus operators and/or parents to appropriate leadership.
  • Assist with general office duties and transportation-department clerical work as needed: record-keeping, phone calls, documentation, basic data entry.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
