About The Position

The primary purpose of this role is to assure that all routes are covered every morning and during the day. This position requires strong communication skills, knowledge of record keeping, and the ability to manage driver assignments and respond to various situations including parent inquiries, accidents, and student location assistance.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or GED preferred
  • Knowledge of record keeping and clerical skills, including computer skills
  • Skills in radio communication
  • Knowledge of City of Odessa and Ector County
  • Ability to read maps and communicate good directions
  • Possess or obtain a class B CDL with “P” & “S” endorsements
  • Have or be eligible for state certification as a school bus driver
  • Experience in school transportation or related field
  • Maintain emotional control under stress

Responsibilities

  • Make sure all drivers log in as they report to work.
  • Communicate with drivers, driver specialists, and substitute drivers personally and by radio.
  • Monitor all drivers as they report to work for signs of any physical or emotional problems that might affect their ability to drive safely.
  • Assign and log driver specialists and substitute assignments.
  • Communicate with lead mechanics about disabled buses.
  • Assign replacement buses and/or drivers.
  • Communicate by phone with parents and district personnel regarding late buses, trips, athletic runs, missed or absent students.
  • Notify emergency units – police, fire, ambulance – of accidents.
  • Assist in the location of lost students.
  • Drive a route or trip when need arises.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Director of Transportation.
