About The Position

Under general supervision, this position is responsible for activities related to dispatch services, work order entries, security system management, Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) management, life safety systems, and emergency response. The role involves scheduling and dispatching workers, crews, equipment, and service vehicles based on calls received. It also includes managing pool vehicle loans, operating and monitoring various communication and safety systems, maintaining records, and coordinating emergency responses. The Dispatcher II acts as a department liaison for fleet management and inventory control.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of related call taking or dispatching experience or operating a 2-way or multi-channel radio.
  • Knowledge of basic radio codes and operations of the dispatch console.
  • Knowledge of procedures involved in dispatching customer services.
  • Knowledge of basic office procedures.
  • Knowledge of streets and highways in Austin/Travis County area.
  • Knowledge of city practice, policy and procedures.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in planning and organizing.
  • Skill in using computers and related software applications.
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
  • Ability to respond quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
  • Ability to use two-way radios.
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with City employees and the public.

  • Familiarity with Tens Codes.

Responsibilities

  • Schedules and dispatches workers, work crews, equipment, or service vehicles to appropriate locations according to trouble calls.
  • Schedules and loans out pool vehicles to authorized employees.
  • Initiates, enters, and updates “Calls For Service” into Computer Aided Dispatch/Computer System Emergency Notification System.
  • Operates and monitors fire alarm systems for department and external buildings.
  • Monitors security/emergency equipment/systems and closed-circuit television monitors; reports breaches of security.
  • Operates/monitors multi-channel radio, audio/video, multi-agency and multi-jurisdictional alpha paging systems.
  • Records and maintains files and records of customer requests, services performed, charges, expenses, inventory, and other dispatch information.
  • Confers with customers or other personnel to address questions, problems, and requests for service or equipment.
  • Enters and dispatches work order service requests.
  • Relays technical assistance, work orders, messages, and information to or from work crews, supervisors, and field inspectors using telephones and two-way radios.
  • Prepares daily work log information for reports.
  • Determines types or amount of supplies needed and places orders.
  • Coordinates emergency response including evacuation process.
  • Operates/monitors multi-channel two-way radio and dispatch consolette.
  • Shifts dispatch communications to field operations teams monitoring their GPS locations while in transit.
  • Initiates, enters, and updates field communications into the communications tracking database Amanda 7.
  • Enters and dispatches work order service requests for fleet vehicles.
