About The Position

This position is open only to current employees of the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office. Applicants must serve and pass their six-month probation period in their current position in order to be eligible to apply. The Discovery Paralegal I will manage the District Court Unit’s (DCU) Seattle daily jail calendar, file and manage daily RUSH cases for DCU, and file all DCU cases with each court location. This role serves as a liaison between the PAO/PbK team/court for any filing issues, maintains Filing Queues in PbK, and processes all pre-trial and follow-up DX for DCU. The position provides primary support with Evidence.com for all DCU, assists trial paralegals with discovery requests, and supports the filing team with NCICs, special projects, and coverage issues. The paralegal will also act as a liaison between the Court and Filing DPAs when an issue arises with a case filing, assist with prepping cases for filing, and provide additional support for importing cases into PbK. Responsibilities include responding to emails in a timely manner, assisting the LSP Supervisor, Unit Chair, and Vice Chairs as requested, and performing related work or other projects as requested or required. The role also requires active participation in PAO equity work, including attending equity training and discussions. Additional responsibilities and/or tasks may be incorporated, or existing ones modified as business needs evolve.

Requirements

  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact with deputy prosecutors, law enforcement officers, defense attorneys, defense investigators, court personnel, witnesses, victims, and other agencies
  • Skills in responding in a positive, mature, and helpful manner with numerous individuals including witnesses who may be in various emotional states and reluctant to assist with prosecution
  • Analytical and critical thinking skills to make decisions and initiate action
  • Time management skills to handle multiple tasks often effectively and accurately within short deadlines
  • Ability to handle emergency situations and work under pressure
  • Skill in using computers and a variety of software such as Prosecutor by Karpel (PbK), Word, Adobe Pro and Excel
  • Must have demonstrated predictable and reliable attendance
  • Must be able and willing to accept supervision, feedback, and coaching
  • Commitment to Race, Equity and Social Justice work including ongoing cultural competence development
  • Desire to work with PAO colleagues and management to identify opportunities for improvement

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with Power BI and other criminal justice programs is a plus
  • Knowledge of legal office practices and procedures, particularly in the Mainstream Criminal Division

  • Assist with prepping cases for filing and provide addition support for importing cases into PbK
