About The Position

The NYC Department of Design and Construction (DDC), Division of Safety and Site Support, is seeking a Director for the Office of Construction Safety. The Director will oversee all aspects of the Agency's construction safety program to help ensure the safe delivery of DDC's capital construction projects. The selected candidate will manage the Safety Field Auditing, Accident Investigation, and Code Compliance units and ensure consistent enforcement of DDC's construction safety policies and compliance with applicable local, state, and federal regulations. Key responsibilities include overseeing construction safety operations, including accident and incident investigations, emergency response, contractor safety performance evaluations, safety audits, and reviews of contractor safety plans and pre-award safety questionnaires. The Director will also oversee the Safety Awareness Program, develop and update safety policies, procedures, and contract documents, prepare presentations, and represent the Office of Construction Safety and the Division of Safety and Site Support at internal and external meetings. In addition, the selected candidate will prepare and distribute monthly safety reports, monitor Agency safety performance, identify trends, analyze audit and accident/incident data, and recommend improvements to strengthen DDC's construction safety programs and practices.

Requirements

  • Permanent in the Administrative Construction Project Manager title or reachable on the DDC promotional list (exam #3523), or the open-competitive list (exam #3039).
  • At least six years of full-time satisfactory experience in construction management work on capital projects, each one of which must have had a dollar value of at least $300,000.
  • At least eighteen months of which must have been in a managerial or consultative capacity in an organization responsible for the management of construction.
  • Full-time satisfactory experience in construction inspection on capital projects, each one of which must have had a dollar value of at least $300,000 (up to four years credited).
  • Full-time satisfactory experience in building construction as a journeyperson in one or more of the skilled building construction trades (up to four years credited).
  • Education in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree in architecture, landscape architecture, or air pollution control, chemical, civil including structural and bridge design, electrical, mechanical, or sanitary engineering (up to four years credited).
  • Possession of a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York.
  • Currently authorized to work full-time in the United States (U.S.).
  • Must present original documents proving citizenship or the legal right to work in the U.S. upon offer of employment.
  • Educational credentials must be from a U.S. Department of Education-recognized accredited institution.

Nice To Haves

  • A New York State license as a professional engineer or registered architect or a license as a professional engineer or registered architect from a state that has reciprocity with New York State may be substituted for the four years of education and experience described in '1', '2' and '3' above.
