About The Position

Athene is expanding into Structured Settlements as part of its broader growth and innovation strategy, backed by the strength and scale of Apollo Global Management. This role is a unique opportunity to build a new underwriting capability from the ground up. The Director, Underwriting (Medical) will establish and scale Athene’s Rated Age underwriting function, creating the strategy, frameworks, and operational foundation to support long-term growth. This is a builder role, ideal for someone who thrives in ambiguity, moves quickly, and wants to shape a function that will become a critical differentiator for Athene in a competitive market.

Requirements

7+ years of relevant experience in insurance underwriting, medical underwriting, structured settlements, or related financial services
4+ years of relevant experience providing leadership (direct or indirect), including building or scaling new capabilities or processes
Proven ability to translate business needs into underwriting frameworks, processes, and operational execution
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant experience

Nice To Haves

Demonstrated experience in medical underwriting, mortality assessment, or Rated Age underwriting (preferred, not required)

Responsibilities

Design and implement Athene’s Rated Age underwriting strategy, operating model, and governance framework
Translate business objectives into scalable underwriting processes, tools, and system requirements
Develop and maintain underwriting guidelines and manuals to ensure consistency, quality, and risk alignment
Partner cross-functionally (Legal, Compliance, Risk, IT, Operations) to operationalize underwriting capabilities
Establish performance metrics, workflows, and continuous improvement initiatives to scale efficiently
Act as a strategic advisor to leadership on underwriting risk, capabilities, and growth opportunities
