About The Position

GIPHY’s Trust & Safety Director oversees the Support and Moderation Teams. They are responsible for shaping the overall strategy for both departments, identifying key partnerships and resources to scale the teams’ processes, and advocating for all Trust & Safety initiatives to improve brand safety, mitigate risk, and increase customer satisfaction. The Head of Trust & Safety is the primary point of escalation for all moderation and support issues, as well as decisions related to GIPHY’s integrations and content policy. They are responsible for developing policy-creation strategies at scale, staying informed about relevant legal requirements for Trust & Safety and online platform compliance, and understanding and advocating for resources that keep GIPHY aligned with, or exceeding, industry standards and requirements.

Requirements

  • 7+ Years of hands-on content moderation, trust and safety experience within relevant content space.
  • Experience in strategic planning, budgeting, and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Data-driven decision-making and the ability to leverage analytics for improvement.
  • Experience with common content moderation methods, such as hash matching, machine learning, automated action, and AI moderation services.
  • Expertise in global regulations (GDPR, TCO, DSA, OSA) and compliance requirements.
  • Solid understanding of content policy creation and enforcement, especially in a digital environment.
  • Experience managing relationships with vendors, law enforcement, and legal teams.
  • Leadership and people management skills, with the ability to inspire and develop a team.
  • Project management skills and experience driving cross-functional initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Own and define the strategic vision for the Trust & Safety department.
  • Develop and manage roadmap, set departmental goals, and ensure alignment with overall company objectives.
  • Oversee departmental budgeting, resource allocation, and financial planning.
  • Collaborate with other leaders across the organization to ensure alignment of initiatives and priorities.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing contractor team working on content moderation.
  • Set clear performance expectations and provide ongoing feedback, coaching, and career development support to the contractor team.
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and performance-driven work culture.
  • Manage training programs to keep moderators updated on new policy decisions or enforcement changes, and manage QA of moderator decisions.
  • Continuously evaluate and improve workflows, processes, and tools to enhance efficiency in content moderation and strategically scale the platform’s moderation services to handle increasing volumes and complexity of content.
  • Implement and oversee these scaling processes while maintaining high standards and understanding highest risks.
  • Collaborate with various teams, including engineering, legal, and product, to propose, implement, and maintain features that mitigate risks associated with user-generated content.
  • Research and manage external vendors to improve the moderation product and scope.
  • Propose new product improvements, manage project scope and requirements, and communicate with stakeholders to find alignment.
  • Oversee the creation, maintenance, and evolution of content policies, including advertising policy.
  • Ensure content policies are up-to-date with industry trends, legal requirements, and platform needs.
  • Ensure content policies are publicly posted, along with all relevant points of contact for compliance.
  • Work closely with data teams to create and maintain dashboards that track key metrics and trends related to content moderation and policy enforcement.
  • Utilize data insights to inform decision-making, identify areas for improvement, and proactively address gaps in current processes.
  • Organize data for large annual reports, such as the Transparency Report and OSA Illegal Content Assessment within deadlines.
  • Stay current on global regulations governing trust and safety, including GDPR, TCO, DSA, and OSA.
  • Collaborate with the Legal team to address compliance issues that apply to user-generated content and online platforms.
  • User network to help identify relevant laws and guidelines that need to be addressed, conduct research, and apply research to GIPHY.
  • Manage relationships and communications with law enforcement, including handling information requests and legal escalations.
  • Oversee IP enforcement and responses to information requests and legal process.
