About The Position

Iredell Health is seeking a dynamic nursing leader for the Director role overseeing Three North and Birthplace. This position holds 24/7 responsibility for all patient care activities within the departments, including reviewing performance against recognized standards. The Director serves as a key public relations representative, interacting with medical staff, patients, and families. This role also encompasses quality and fiscal responsibility for the department, requiring a strong understanding of legal aspects of nursing and regulatory requirements. The Director will have full access to patient health information. Three North provides medical care to both pediatric and adult patients, while Birthplace facilitates over 600 births annually, welcoming mothers, babies, and families. The Director collaborates with two Assistant Directors to enhance patient experience, foster staff development, and ensure the community feels at home during their care.

Requirements

  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina.
  • BSN required (current incumbents as of 1/1/2010 are excluded from this requirement).
  • Related clinical experience is required for area of responsibility.
  • Problem solving and leadership abilities.
  • Good interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • 24-hour/7 day per week responsibility for all patient care activities in their department.
  • Reviewing performance in relation to recognized standards.
  • Functioning as a primary public relations representative for the department and staff in dealing with medical staff, patients, and families.
  • Having quality and fiscal responsibility for their department.
  • Ensuring accessibility and visibility by routinely visiting and talking with employees as well as internal and external customers.
  • Ensuring employees are exhibiting excellent customer service behavior; dealing with deficiencies in customer service behaviors.
  • Ensuring patient satisfaction improvement strategies set by IHS are implemented within the assigned area(s) of responsibility.
  • Making timely decisions with obvious consideration of the impact of the decision on patient care, financial resources, employee acceptance, public image, and other departments.
  • Displays and promotes a high degree of integrity and honesty by ensuring appropriate and timely communication of work related information to department staff, administrative staff, and other directors so as to facilitate work flow and the decision making process.
  • Effectively training and supervising staff to accomplish goals and objectives; continually ensuring training of employees and reinforcing knowledge of TJC, OSHA, Infection Control, Core Measures, departmental quality initiatives, and other policies.
  • Accepts responsibility for guiding, coaching, encouraging and leading employees to successful work performance; deals appropriately with poor performers or policy violations according to IHS Disciplinary Policy.
  • Consistently and fairly applies Iredell Health System policies and procedures and ensures that they are clearly communicated to employees.
  • Communicates well with staff, holding at least 10 monthly documented staff meetings within a year.
  • Encourages employees to make decisions at the lowest possible level commensurate with their authority.
  • Conducts an annual performance evaluation on each employee in compliance with IHS policy within two months of each employee’s review date.
  • Submits written recommendations with justification and projected cost for new equipment, staffing, and other operational expenses at the time of budget preparation.
  • Reviews financial reports weekly and operates within or below budget, identifying and justifying variances within assigned areas of control so that revenues and expenses relate according to volumes/targets.
  • Evaluates staffing and priorities, adjusting schedules or assignments accordingly so that required activities are completed in the most efficient way possible.
  • Designates and allocates job duties so as to ensure a fair and reasonable distribution of the work load, and so as to ensure employees have enough to do at all times.
  • Develops, communicates, implements, and reports progress on a departmental plan that coordinates with the Health System’s Strategic Plan.
  • Develops, communicates, implements, and reports progress on departmental quality improvement initiatives that coordinate with the Health System’s Quality Improvement Plan.
  • Shows ability to prioritize and anticipate problems and change directions as necessary/required.
