About The Position

The YMCA of the National Capital Region is seeking a Director, Technical Instruction to oversee and deliver high-quality technical training. This role is crucial for ensuring participants gain the necessary skills and certifications for employment. Responsibilities include curriculum design, instruction, mentorship of technical instructors, and aligning training with industry standards. The Director will directly oversee Lead Technical Instructors in YMCA Trades Technical Training Programs to ensure consistency and quality. Additionally, the Director will support engagement with employers, advisory committees, and community partners to enhance program effectiveness and sustainability.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary education or an equivalent combination of experience or minimum of five-eight years of experience in the construction, home renovation, or sustainable building industry.
  • Fluent in English, oral and written.
  • Extensive knowledge of tools, techniques, and safety procedures used in construction and renovation, including hand and power tools such as mitre saws, table saws, nail guns, and power drivers.
  • Experience supervising construction projects or leading teams on job sites.
  • Strong understanding of Skilled Trades Ontario policies, apprenticeship processes, and training standards.
  • Ability to provide clear and concise instruction on complex technical topics, ensuring comprehension among students.
  • Skilled in demonstrating hands-on exercises and practical applications to reinforce theoretical concepts.
  • Experience assessing student performance and adapting teaching methods to accommodate diverse learning styles.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Applicants must already have a valid permit to work in Canada.
  • A Police Record check, not more than 6 months old is required.
  • Annually, staff must complete the mandatory training for the protection of Children & Youth and submit the certificate of completion.

Nice To Haves

  • French is an asset.
  • Relevant certifications in construction, renovation, or education are an asset.
  • Previous teaching, training, or mentorship experience in a trades-related setting is highly preferred.
  • Experience working with diverse populations and underrepresented groups in trades is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership for all technical instruction and curriculum delivery across skilled trades training programs.
  • Provide instructional evaluation and training for partner organizations participating in the Power of Trades licensing model to ensure consistency, safety and quality.
  • Develop and implement instructional plans that align with industry standards, regulatory requirements, and workforce needs.
  • Train and mentor Technical Instructors to ensure high-quality program delivery.
  • Oversee Lead Technical Instructors in YMCA Trades Technical Training Programs to maintain instructional consistency and quality at multiple locations.
  • Ensure training facilities, equipment, and instructional resources meet operational and safety standards.
  • Oversee the design, review, and enhancement of trades curricula to ensure relevance, quality, and compliance with applicable standards.
  • Ensure instructional practices incorporate hands-on learning, workplace safety, technical competencies, and employability skills.
  • Monitor program effectiveness through student achievement data, instructor feedback, employer input, and accreditation requirements.
  • Teach as required technical training classes, as well as deliver specialized workshops on core trade skills, workplace safety, energy-efficient construction, and emerging industry trends.
  • Represent the program in local and/or provincial steering committees to maintain curriculum relevance and demand.
  • Participate in outreach initiatives, including one-day trades training experiences, industry networking events, and recruitment activities to attract and support underrepresented groups in skilled trades.
