About The Position

Deepgram is seeking a Director, Technical Accounting & Financial Reporting to prepare the company for its first external audit and, ultimately, for public markets. This role reports directly to the Chief Accounting Officer and will be a key member of a small, dynamic finance team. The successful candidate will own the technical accounting and financial reporting functions, guiding the company from its current private status to audit-readiness and IPO-readiness. This position requires a proactive, self-starter who can quarterback complex accounting initiatives, establish standards, and serve as the primary technical authority in interactions with auditors, valuation specialists, and external accounting advisors. The role emphasizes an AI-first mindset, expecting the candidate to leverage AI tools extensively for research, drafting, analysis, and workflow automation.

Requirements

  • Active CPA certification.
  • Strong foundation from a Big 4 or national accounting firm.
  • 8+ years of progressive experience in technical accounting and/or financial reporting.
  • Deep fluency in US GAAP.
  • Hands-on technical expertise across revenue recognition (ASC 606), equity compensation (ASC 718), leases (ASC 842), and business combinations (ASC 805), with the ability to draft defensible technical memos.
  • Experience preparing GAAP financial statements and footnotes from scratch.
  • Experience managing external auditors and external accounting consultants, including scoping, directing, and pushing back when necessary.
  • A builder's mindset with comfort in ambiguity, a proactive approach, and a strong bias for action.
  • Demonstrated AI-native working style, including daily use of LLMs for drafting, research, and analysis, with a concrete understanding of their capabilities and limitations for accounting.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical accounting concepts for non-accountants.
  • Comfort with scripting or automating tasks using languages like Python or SQL.
  • High integrity, high ownership, and low ego.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience preparing a company for its first external audit.
  • Prior experience taking a company public (S-1, IPO readiness, first 10-K).
  • Capitalized software accounting experience in a SaaS or AI business.
  • Experience coordinating with valuation specialists on 409As, purchase price allocations (PPAs), or intangible asset valuations.
  • Exposure to international transfer pricing or intercompany accounting.
  • Working knowledge of tools like Workiva, NetSuite, or FloQast, with strong opinions on their utility.

Responsibilities

  • Own technical accounting across key areas including revenue recognition (ASC 606), stock-based compensation and equity transactions (ASC 718), capitalized software (internal-use and software to be sold), leases (ASC 842), business combinations (ASC 805), and complex financing instruments.
  • Own the end-to-end preparation of GAAP financial statements and footnote disclosures, including Management's Discussion and Analysis (MD&A) and registration statement disclosures.
  • Manage the external audit process, including building the policy library, establishing the "prepared by client" (PBC) process, and serving as the primary technical point of contact for auditors, defending accounting positions independently.
  • Scope and manage external technical accounting advisors, directing their work, determining when to utilize external resources versus in-house execution, and ensuring adherence to company standards.
  • Own the relationship with valuation specialists for 409As, purchase price allocations, and intangible asset valuations.
  • Partner with tax advisors on international transfer pricing and intercompany accounting.
  • Lay the groundwork for SEC reporting (S-1, 10-K, 10-Q) and SOX readiness by designing workflows, controls, and calendars to support public-company operations.
  • Develop and document clear, defensible, and scalable accounting policies.
  • Aggressively leverage AI for research, memo drafting, tie-outs, disclosure benchmarking, and workflow automation, and develop custom AI tooling as needed.
  • Build and develop the accounting team as the company scales.
