About The Position

McGraw Hill is seeking a Director of Software Engineering to set direction, develop engineering leaders, and drive delivery across multiple teams. This strategic leadership role connects people, product, and technology and has direct impact on the direction and health of a significant portion of the engineering organization. The position is remote and open to applicants authorized to work for any employer within the United States. The Director translates business goals into an executable engineering vision, makes decisions about new development and modernization, and communicates the rationale so teams can make sound decisions independently. The role shapes team structure, ownership, and spans of control; guides intentional recruiting; and owns delivery across multi-team, multi-quarter programs. It uses data to improve quality, throughput, and reliability, while building repeatable delivery systems. The Director develops engineering managers and senior individual contributors, builds succession plans, and drives calibrations. The role also builds effective relationships with platform, infrastructure, and SRE teams; aligns on shared standards; coordinates across onshore and nearshore teams and time zones; and manages vendor or partner relationships where applicable. In partnership with executive stakeholders, Product, UX, and SRE, the Director connects engineering strategy to business outcomes and fosters an inclusive, accountable, high-performance culture. Teams work with a full-stack technology environment that includes Go, Java, Node.js, PHP, TypeScript, Angular, RxJS, NgRx, Playwright, MySQL, PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, GitHub and GitHub Actions, Docker, Kubernetes, New Relic, and AWS services including EKS, ECS, RDS, and Lambda. Collaboration tools include JIRA, Confluence, Zoom, Slack, and Office 365.

  • Strong full-stack software background, with a focus on usability, accessibility, and scalability.
  • Ability to engage credibly in frontend and backend tradeoffs and maintain a high technical bar across the stack.
  • Strong analytical, diagnostic, and problem-solving skills, including the ability to find root causes and make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Highly motivated, proactive, collaborative, and able to persuade others and influence outcomes without relying on authority.
  • Ability to bring clarity to ambiguity, hold a high bar, give honest feedback, and establish fair accountability.
  • Ability to think systematically about organizational structure, delivery processes, and technical architecture.
  • Commitment to intentional hiring and building relationships with senior talent.
  • Ability to collaborate across platform teams, shared services, and cross-functional partners.

Responsibilities

  • Set technical direction by translating business goals into an executable engineering vision and making decisions about development and modernization.
  • Shape team boundaries, ownership, and spans of control, and revisit organizational design as needs change.
  • Personally shape hiring decisions, build talent relationships, and develop leadership capability through recruiting.
  • Own delivery across multiple teams and multi-quarter programs; use data to improve quality, throughput, and reliability.
  • Develop engineering managers and senior individual contributors, build succession plans, and drive calibrations.
  • Build effective relationships with platform, infrastructure, and SRE teams, uphold shared standards, and manage dependencies.
  • Build trust and cohesion across onshore and nearshore teams, align across time zones and communication styles, and manage vendor or partner relationships where applicable.
  • Align engineering with business outcomes and build trust with executive stakeholders, Product, UX, and SRE.
  • Promote inclusion, accountability, team effectiveness, and a high-performance culture.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging software technologies and bring that perspective to team investment and evolution.
