About The Position

The Director of Software Engineering – Motion Technology is responsible for the strategy, development, coordination, and staffing of the globally distributed engineering teams that build Mastercam’s toolpath and motion technology — the core of the product’s value to customers. This role oversees the software development lifecycle for the toolpath domain, ensuring the delivery of high-quality software solutions, while owning the budget for the domain and ensuring resources are effectively allocated and utilized. Beyond current product delivery, this role owns the multi-year evolution of Mastercam’s motion planning technology: the development of next-generation motion capabilities designed to serve multiple business units within the Group, their deployment across cloud, hybrid-cloud, and desktop environments, and a sustained, long-term roadmap that continues to strengthen the desktop application. The Director bridges long-term platform investment with near- and mid-term product outcomes, in close partnership with Product Management, Architecture, Applied Research, and business unit stakeholders. This role requires a strategic thinker with a deep technical background in CAM/toolpath technology and excellent leadership skills.

  • 10+ years’ experience in software engineering, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Proven track record of success delivering complex software solutions in a timely manner and within budget.
  • Deep domain expertise in CAM, toolpath generation, motion planning, CNC machining, or closely related geometric/manufacturing computing domains.
  • Strong technical expertise in agile software development, with proven architecture and design expertise and hands-on knowledge of modern programming languages and tools such as C++, C#, Python, and Git.
  • Solid financial acumen, including budget ownership and experience managing capitalized software development projects.
  • Demonstrated success leading multi-year platform or technology initiatives spanning multiple teams or business units.
  • The ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, with a keen ability to execute and drive projects to a positive conclusion.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a proven ability to manage multiple concurrent projects.
  • Willingness to travel as needed, including internationally.

Nice To Haves

  • Business or financial management education (e.g., MBA) is a plus.
  • Experience developing in Visual Studio for Windows is a plus.
  • Experience architecting or delivering cloud or hybrid-cloud services alongside established desktop products is preferred.
  • Experience adopting or scaling modern AI-assisted engineering practices, including agentic development workflows, is a plus.
  • Strategic Mindset with Technical Credibility: Able to own a long-horizon technology roadmap while remaining credible with senior engineers and architects.
  • Communication Proficiency: Strong verbal and written communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, capable of delivering information in a timely and succinct manner to executive audiences.
  • Collaborative Approach: Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills with a proven ability to build relationships, work in a decentralized organization, and engage across business units and diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Organizational & Financial Skills: Ability to plan, budget, and manage resources efficiently across multiple concurrent initiatives, including capitalized project planning and reporting.
  • Operating Under Uncertainty: Guides teams through ambiguity on long-horizon initiatives while maintaining clear accountability for outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Define and own the long-term toolpath and motion technology roadmap, aligned with Mastercam’s product, platform, and technology strategy.
  • Lead the development of Mastercam’s next-generation motion planning technology as a durable, multi-year platform investment, from architecture through incremental delivery into shipping products.
  • Drive the evolution of toolpath technology toward cloud and hybrid-cloud architectures while ensuring a sustained flow of value back into the desktop application.
  • Partner with business units across the Group to position motion planning technology for cross-BU adoption, aligning requirements, interfaces, and delivery commitments.
  • Partner with Applied Research to transition validated research outcomes in motion planning into production-quality, supportable engineering deliverables.
  • Own build, partner, and buy evaluations for motion and toolpath technology components, balancing strategic control, cost, and time to market.
  • Safeguard Mastercam’s intellectual property in motion and toolpath technology, including supporting patent activities and ensuring appropriate protection of strategic technology assets.
  • Develop and implement software engineering strategies, standards, and processes to ensure high-quality and timely delivery of software products.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product management, design, and QA, to define and prioritize product features and requirements.
  • Oversee the architecture and design of toolpath and motion software systems, ensuring scalability, reliability, performance, and security across desktop and cloud deployments.
  • Drive continuous improvement in software development practices, tools, and methodologies, including the responsible adoption of AI-assisted and agentic development workflows with appropriate security and quality governance.
  • Own the engineering budget for the toolpath domain, including project timelines, resource allocation, and financial planning and reporting for capitalized development projects.
