About The Position

This position, in conjunction with Senior Management, leads the operation, identification, growth and development of the physical infrastructure required to support the research enterprise of the Joseph Stokes Jr., Research Institute (JSRI) of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). The Director reports to the Vice-President of Research Finance and works collaboratively with JSRI senior management as well as with other senior management across CHOP Departments to coordinate the availability and supply of infrastructure needs of the research enterprise. Activities include project management for construction and renovation concerns from the users perspective as well as programmatic relocation coordination; direction of daily operations issues such as Facilities, Information Technologies, Communications, Security and Environmental Health and Safety; strategic and long range planning of research space allocation, inventory development, maintenance, and reporting for capital equipment, space utilization metrics and furniture; education and mentoring; and other general administrative activities related to the research community.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree Required
  • At least ten (10) years of construction, facilities, infrastructure or resource planning/project management experience Required
  • At least seven (7) years of leadership, management or supervisory experience Required
  • Excellent computer skills including familiarity with Word, Excel, and database programs.
  • Familiarity with regulatory agencies including, but not limited to USDA/NIH/AAALAC for animal facility program; NIH for biosafety program; NRC for radiation safety program.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's Degree in related business, scientific, engineering or architectural field Preferred
  • At least twelve (12) years of construction, facilities, infrastructure or resource planning/project management experience in a research related environment Preferred

Responsibilities

  • Represent the interests of senior management and the research community in relation to new construction projects
  • Direct and coordinate the activities of significant renovation projects to existing research space
  • Relocation coordination of new and existing research programs
  • Represent JSRI and CHOP to external organizations to facilitate growth and development of appropriate research based physical infrastructure
  • Provide direction of other Research oriented projects
  • Direct fulfillment of Support Service requirements of the research community
  • Direct minor renovation projects to existing research and administrative space
  • Identify, establish and develop infrastructure appropriate for the incorporation of research capital acquisitions
  • Interface and coordinate with CHOP departments and external vendors for the provision of services in a time appropriate manner
  • Coordinate construction, renovation, maintenance and other space issues to ensure minimal impact to ongoing research activities
  • Along with Senior Management, anticipate, identify and fit out space for incoming faculty, programmatic initiatives and shifts in research emphasis
  • Establish space requirements for programmatic planning and development
  • Policy and procedure development for methodology associated with space related medium and long range planning objectives
  • Establish short and long range organizational goals and objectives to anticipate and manage growth in the research enterprise
  • Track current allocation of research space according to various parameters that may vary over time
  • Implement and assist in the development of a space management database system
  • Assist in the development and implementation of a database for furniture and equipment utilization
  • Monitor usage of space identifying discrepancies relative to the formal allocation plan
  • Advise investigators and program staff regarding procedural issues
  • Establish and in some cases, interpret relevant policies and procedures for incoming investigators and staff
  • Provide referrals as appropriate to other units within the JSRI
  • Represent and advocate for research issues in various forums including, but not limited to, hospital-wide committees and project management meetings.
  • Direct programmatic resolution of research related insurance claims
  • Budget development and maintenance of operational, construction and renovation related accounts
  • Travel, as considered appropriate, for relocation of new faculty or to (inter)national meetings related to the above objectives
  • Direct research related aspects of the CHOP Irradiator program
  • Other duties as assigned
