About The Position

Calpine Corporation is seeking a Director Project Management & Development to oversee engineering efforts related to carbon capture initiatives, primarily supporting California CCS initiatives, while also supporting other CCS projects across the Company’s portfolio as needed. This role will collaborate with technology owners and EPC contractors to manage a team focused on process engineering design and ensure the quality of third-party work. The position provides engineering and technical support for new projects, identifies and develops new technologies, analyzes technical aspects, and provides cost and budgeting information for planning and cost analytics. It ensures spending for overall budgets, schedules, and performance standards are set, maintained, and achieved. The role also involves developing SOW technical scopes for third-party contract resources supporting development cost build and analytics. It maintains the efficiency of important aspects of the project management process, such as planning, scheduling, coordination, budget, and risk assessment. The Director defines and develops project management best practices, processes, and policies to ensure alignment with corporate strategy and goals. They partner with multi-departmental leadership and other stakeholders to locate opportunities and develop and prioritize projects according to relevant measurement criteria. The role is responsible for ensuring that all project development technical aspects are sufficient in supporting commercial approval and are adequate to support execution within the defined scope, quality, time, and cost requirements. Additionally, the Director is responsible for the supervision of Project Managers to ensure that all projects are delivered within the defined scope, quality, time, and cost requirements. The role also assesses new possible technical innovations and technology that may be used to improve efficiencies in existing power generation assets or in the development and implementation of new lines of business.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent, prefer Master’s Degree.
  • 15+ years of specialization.
  • 10+ years of process engineering experience in carbon capture or other gas extraction processes; exposure to amine treating processes highly desirable.
  • Experience managing and delivering complex project portfolios across all phases of the project life cycle and a demonstrated understanding of best practices in project management (business case development, scope definition, controls, contracting, etc.).
  • Track record of effectively building and leading small to mid-sized teams.
  • Exposure to business development activities around large scale projects.
  • Excellent written, oral, and visual communication skills to communicate effectively with all levels and teams of the organization, our customers, and third parties.
  • Experience working in a complex, matrixed organization.
  • Knowledge and experience of relevant Safety, Health, and Environmental regulations.
  • Project management and contractor management experience.

Responsibilities

  • Support the design for the existing portfolio of FEED studies and pilot projects, as well as additional studies undertaken by Calpine.
  • Assist with engineering input on projects that receive positive FID during the EPC phase, collaborating across the organization to help facilitate on-time and on-budget project delivery.
  • Support the business development process by providing technical input into the scoping of feasibility projects and subsequent FEED studies.
  • Seek out and evaluate new CCUS technologies.
  • Work toward developing a standard ISBL design that can be scaled and applied to future projects.
  • Provide engineering troubleshooting support to operational projects.
  • Effectively implement lessons learned to assure continuous improvement of the organization’s designs.
  • Grow the process engineering team as required to support Calpine Corporation’s portfolio of current and future carbon capture programs.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and instruction to the process of engineering practice.
  • Mentor and guide less experienced engineers.
  • Apply expert knowledge of commonly used process concepts, practices, codes, and procedures within the process engineering services industry.
  • Ensure that all design and project work comply with applicable legislation, accepted engineering codes and standards, and Company policies and standards.
  • Analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve issues which arise during production operation.
  • Strive to constantly improve process capability and production volume.
