Director, Product Management - Next Generation Quantum Systems

About The Position

IonQ is seeking a Director of Product Management for Next Generation Quantum Systems to set product direction at the intersection of scientific discovery and commercial opportunity. The role owns the product vision and roadmap for next-generation quantum systems, beginning with Superion 256, and turns emerging technical capabilities into differentiated offerings for cloud and on-premises customers. The Director will work with customers and partners and alongside IonQ’s science, engineering, and solutions development teams. The role requires a deep understanding of IonQ’s hardware, system software, and research pipeline, and judgment to connect long-term ambition to investment choices. The Director will define which opportunities to pursue and which capabilities matter most, balancing performance, cost, reliability, usability, and delivery timing. Success is measured by customer value, adoption, and commercial outcomes. The position requires a technically credible, commercially minded product leader who can explore new markets, make difficult product choices, communicate complex technical and commercial decisions, influence senior executives, and build alignment across technical and business teams. Employment is subject to applicable U.S. export-control and government-contract eligibility requirements.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, a related engineering field, or equivalent real-world experience.
At least 6 years of experience in technical product management or equivalent roles, including leadership of complex product strategy and roadmaps.
Experience in hardware-software co-development or scientific instrumentation.
Direct experience with frontier science product management or engineering leadership sufficient to partner credibly with engineering program leads on system-design tradeoffs and key functional and non-functional requirements.
Demonstrated success identifying and validating new market opportunities, defining differentiated products, and guiding an emerging technology toward customer adoption.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical and commercial choices, influence senior executives, and build alignment across technical and business teams.
A record of leading through ambiguity, making evidence-based investment and prioritization decisions, mentoring others, and driving outcomes across functions.

Nice To Haves

Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Physics, Quantum Information Science, Chemistry, Applied Mathematics, or a related engineering field.
Experience turning research-grade technologies into customer-facing products, particularly in domains where customers care about underlying capability and not only pricing and packaging.
Experience in Scientific Computing or High Performance Computing, including related tools, users, business models, and operational challenges.
Experience contributing to products built from complex hardware and software systems.

Responsibilities

Define a compelling, differentiated product vision for IonQ’s next-generation quantum systems, grounded in customer problems and an informed view of market evolution.
Engage current and prospective customers, application developers, and ecosystem partners to identify unmet needs and emerging use cases.
Partner with science and engineering leaders to identify promising capabilities and define system requirements.
Prioritize near-term customer needs and longer-term opportunities, making explicit tradeoffs among performance, cost, reliability, usability, and delivery timing.
Work with Customer Success, Applications, and technical teams to learn from deployments and early access programs and use those results to shape future product direction.
