Director, Product Management - Next Generation Quantum Systems

IonQ•Bothell, WA
•$212,000 - $312,000

About The Position

IonQ is seeking a Director of Product Management for Next Generation Quantum Systems to shape what the company builds next and how advances in quantum computing become products customers adopt and use. The role owns the product vision and roadmap for next-generation systems, beginning with Superion 256, and turns emerging technical capabilities into differentiated offerings for cloud and on-premises customers. The director will work with customers and partners, and alongside IonQ’s science, engineering, and solutions development teams. The role connects long-term product ambition to practical investment decisions, including which opportunities to pursue, which capabilities matter most, and what each system generation must deliver to earn adoption and demonstrate technical leadership. It requires a deep understanding of IonQ’s hardware, system software, and research pipeline, as well as prioritization across customer needs and longer-term opportunities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, a related engineering field, or equivalent real-world experience.
  • At least 6 years of experience in technical product management or equivalent roles.
  • Experience leading complex product strategy and roadmaps, including hardware-software co-development or scientific instrumentation.
  • Direct experience in frontier science product management or engineering leadership, sufficient to partner credibly with engineering program leads on system design tradeoffs and key functional and non-functional requirements.
  • Demonstrated success identifying and validating new market opportunities, defining differentiated products, and guiding emerging technology toward customer adoption.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical and commercial choices, influence senior executives, and build alignment across technical and business teams.
  • A record of leading through ambiguity and making evidence-based investment and prioritization decisions.
  • Ability to work in a role involving technology subject to U.S. export control and government contract restrictions; employment is contingent on meeting applicable U.S. Person, licensing, or license-exception requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Physics, Quantum Information Science, Chemistry, Applied Mathematics, or a related engineering field.
  • Experience turning research-grade technologies into customer-facing products, particularly in domains where customers care about underlying capability, not just pricing and packaging.
  • Experience in Scientific Computing or High Performance Computing, including associated tools, users, business models, and operational challenges.
  • Experience contributing to products built from complex hardware and software systems.

Responsibilities

  • Define a compelling, differentiated product vision for IonQ’s next-generation quantum systems, grounded in customer problems and an understanding of how the market could evolve.
  • Engage current and prospective customers, application developers, and ecosystem partners to discover unmet needs and emerging use cases.
  • Partner with science and engineering leaders to identify promising capabilities and define system requirements.
  • Prioritize near-term customer needs and longer-term opportunities, making explicit tradeoffs among performance, cost, reliability, usability, and delivery timing.
  • Define product success in terms of customer value, adoption, and commercial outcomes.
  • Work with Customer Success, Applications, and technical teams to learn from deployments and early access programs and use results to shape future systems.
  • Lead complex product strategy and roadmaps, make evidence-based investment and prioritization decisions, and drive outcomes across functions.
  • Mentor others and build alignment across technical and business teams.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision plans.
  • Matching 401(k).
  • Unlimited PTO and paid holidays.
  • Parental and adoption leave.
  • Legal insurance.
  • Home technology stipend.
  • Base salary, bonus, equity, and a range of benefits.
