About The Position

To provide clinical and administrative direction the Inpatient and Outpatient, Ambulatory, and Infusion Pharmacy Departments. Management of the service includes 24-hour accountability and authority for maintaining a quality program of care. The Director of Pharmacy Services integrates the Pharmacy program into the overall goals of the hospital. The Director of Pharmacy Services establishes rapport with other departments, as well as Medical Staff and Nursing Services. New programs are evaluated and adopted to enhance patient care.

Requirements

• Current New Hampshire Pharmacy license required.
• Ability to plan and perform a wide variety of duties requiring general knowledge of policies and procedures applicable for that area.
• Requires considerable judgment to work independently toward general results, devising methods, modifying or adapting standard procedures to meet different conditions, making decisions based on precedent and policy
• Ability to endure periods of heavy workload or excessive stress; ability to work with frequent interruptions and respond appropriately to unexpected situations.

• Must possess the physical and mental abilities to perform the tasks normally associated with this position that involves a combination of sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, and reaching.

Nice To Haves

• Bachelor’s degree from an American Council on Pharmaceutical Education accredited college of pharmacy strongly preferred
• Pharm.D. preferred
• Previous hospital pharmacy experience preferred
• Previous pharmacy management experience preferred
• Five years administrative experience preferred
• An equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.

Responsibilities

• Ensures the Pharmacy Departments meets all legal and accreditation requirements.
• Supervises the dispensation of all drugs and reviews corresponding documentation.
• Inspects medication areas for compliance with legal and hospital policies and procedures.
• Maintains strict control and accountability for inventory of the primary dispensary and of distributions to locations throughout the hospital.
• Plans, organizes, and administers the philosophy and goals of the Pharmacy Departments.
• In conjunction with the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee formulates, implements, and evaluates the policies, protocols and procedures affecting drug therapy.
• Communicates changes effectively.
• Interviews and selects candidates for employment.
• Orients, trains, supervises, directs, schedules, and assigns work of the Pharmacy staff either directly or through subordinates in conjunction with the Employee Experience Department.
• Initiates, makes effective recommendation and/or approves personnel actions, including, but not limited to hiring, transferring, suspending, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, or adjusting of grievances involving assigned personnel.
• Prepares and conducts formal/informal performance evaluations and recommends appropriate merit increases involving subordinate staff members.
• Prepares the budget for the Pharmacy Departments within established guidelines.
• Participates with hospital administration in recommending service and staffing changes and subsequent salary budget.
• Reviews specifications, makes recommendations, and coordinates the purchase of necessary equipment and materials.
• Responsible to provide written reports and recommendations regarding the pharmacy service to hospital administration.
• Represents the Pharmacy Departments to other departments and members within the institution, and to other hospitals, vendors, and the public.
• Demonstrates clinical and leadership skills which serve as a role model for departmental staff.
• Maintains fluid communication among staff members, other departments, and other health care professionals.
• Fosters an environment conducive to creativity, innovation, professional growth, and ethical practice.
• Establishes, monitors, and evaluates the department’s performance; makes necessary changes to maintain hospital standards.
• Research techniques and technology for increasing efficiency and effectiveness of services provided by the department and in support of the hospital’s overall mission.
• Monitors and evaluates the performance of the Ambulatory Pharmacy department and makes necessary changes to maintain ambulatory care standards.
• Contacts drug representatives as appropriate; ensures cost efficiency in current and newly initiated purchasing contracts.
• Determines the appropriateness of contracts and drug safety in conjunction with hospital group purchasing organization.
• Implements quality control and preventative maintenance of all equipment.
• Contacts service representatives for repairs and ensures quality of work.
• Reports and returns erroneous or defective drugs and disposable items for replacement or credit.
• Presents updated drug information to hospital staff and patients as necessary.
• Attends and participates in all relevant hospital in-service programs, committees and required events.
• Participates in Pharmacy training programs and staff meetings
• Works within the policies, procedures, and protocols as they relate to the job.
• Participates in appropriate role in hospital disasters, fire drills, and other emergency situations.
• Complies with and enforces all established hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
• Exercises care in the operation and use of hospital equipment and reference materials.
• Ensures routine cleaning and preventative maintenance to ensure continuing functioning of equipment.
• Maintains work areas in a clean and organized manner.
• Ensures confidentiality of employee, legal, budget and hospital matters.
• Maintains communications; establishes and maintains working relationships with patients, employees, regulatory agencies and vendors.
• Maintains personal professional training and development to keep abreast of changes and maintains status in the field.
• Maintains professional affiliations, attends outside seminars, and conferences, and confers with peers at other hospitals and organizations.
• Performs similar or related duties as required or directed.
• Carry out the duties of pharmacist as necessary
• Reports to work as scheduled or communicates deviations to Director of Pharmacy and Employee Health (if applicable)
