About The Position

Under administrative direction, performs professional and administrative work in leading the victim witness services unit, managing the Victim/Witness Assistance Program, supervising two victim advocates, liaising with multiple agencies on multidisciplinary teams for special/ vulnerable victims (child abuse, elder abuse, sexual assault and domestic violence victims), and serves on the office leadership team. This position requires excellent communication skills and considerable tact and a desire to help and work with crime victims from many different backgrounds. The Victim/Witness Assistance Program provides services and support to victims and witnesses for the purpose of alleviating crime related trauma and encouraging cooperation/participation in the criminal justice system. Work involves developing, planning and implementing program services to meet victim/witness needs, requirements of the Victim Witness Rights Act as written in §19.2-11.01 of the Virginia Code and the guidelines of the Department of Criminal Justice Services.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior direct victim advocate experience
  • Deep knowledge and understanding of the criminal justice system, including justice-system based advocates
  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology or criminal justice
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including focusing on a growth mindset, following a collaborative approach, and ability to work both independently and on different office teams
  • Equivalent experience will be considered

Responsibilities

  • Manages program budget, funds and expenditures to include grant development and administration
  • Provides direct assistance and services to victims of crimes and witnesses to include crisis intervention, emergency assistance, and referrals to other agencies
  • Informs victims regarding the legal proceedings
  • Prepares victims and witnesses for participation in trial proceedings
  • Prepares a variety of reports, statistical information and summaries regarding program activities
  • Coordinates services with other agencies
  • Supervises Victim-Witness staff, including interns and volunteers
