About The Position

Plans, directs and supervises the work of the 21st Judicial District Attorney’s Victim Services Unit. Provides leadership for the growth and development of the Victim Services Unit, ensuring staffing and resources effectively meet organizational and community needs. Supervises a staff in accomplishing the goals of the program by training, directing and coordinating workflow. Serves as a member of the executive leadership team and communicates professionally and routinely with law enforcement partners, court staff, local and statewide agencies, and the general public to respond in a competent and timely manner to requests for service, inquiries and complaints. Maintains limited caseload of high priority cases. For those cases: contacts victims of VRA crimes on a daily basis; assists with witnesses/victims in preliminary hearings, motions hearings and jury trial coordination as requested by District Attorneys. Accompany victims to court; attends meetings with victims and District Attorney; acts as liaison with attorney and victim; explains legal system and procedures to victim; provides appropriate referrals to victims for local services. Maintain working knowledge of funds available through VALE and Mandated costs and keep consistent and accurate records relating to such expenses. Maintain a working knowledge of what process, procedure, and standards are used by the Victim’s Compensation Fund Board. Attends meetings and/or training in house and out of the work place to further knowledge regarding program(s). Attends related conferences for continuing education. Monitor victim/witness rights legislation. Provides education and training to District Attorney staff and community partners regarding the Victim Rights Amendment (VRA) including the best practices and trauma informed approaches for serving and supporting victims of crime. Provides training on VRA, crime specific topics (Domestic Violence, Strangulation etc.) to law enforcement partners, Victim Advocate Program academies and other agencies as needed. Responsible for overall supervision of all victim services staff to include, Victim Service Manager, Victim Specialists, Restitution Coordinators, VALE/Crime Victim’s Compensation Coordinator, and other services support staff. Reviews and evaluates job performance of those employees. Ensures designated staff maintain monthly and annual engagement with the VALE and the Victim’s Compensation board. Prepares and makes presentations at civic and social organizations to promote awareness of crime victim services. Serve as 21st Judicial District Attorney representative with public and other agencies. Provide program services to other agencies as requested. Identify relevant community organizations to make determinations on whether there is a need for a representative from the 21st Judicial District Attorney’s Office. Oversees the administration of the Victim Witness Assistance Program within the District Attorney’s office according to federal, state and local regulations. Oral and written communications must be clear and effective. Confidentiality is required. Maintain a working knowledge of what grants are available, and the applicable time frames, for local, state and federal grant opportunities. Seek and oversee appropriate grants and grant applications on behalf of the 21st Judicial District Attorney’s Office. Ensure compliance with all grant requirements and reporting obligations. Performs other related duties as assigned. Demonstrate professionalism, composure, and appropriate interpersonal skills during performance of tasks, duties and responsibilities that take place in this adversarial system. This adversarial system includes contentious dealings (in person, by phone, electronically, or by written correspondence) with individual victims, witnesses, law enforcement, or other members of the public, often resulting in mental and physical stresses. Demonstrate professionalism, composure, and appropriate interpersonal skills in reviewing and/or discussing information pertaining to criminal cases. These criminal cases require frequent exposure to reports of assaults and murders, including, but not limited to, physical assaults, verbal abuse, sexual assaults (upon adults and children), and child abuse. The discovery in the cases will also require frequent exposure to gruesome, disturbing, and/or sexually explicit photographs, images and recordings.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in psychology, social work, sociology or related field
  • three (3) years related experience with supervisory responsibility.
  • Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the job.
  • Driver’s license
