About The Position

The Director of Transportation supervises transportation services for Lowell Public Schools. This role involves developing efficient and safe bus routes, minimizing costs, and ensuring compliance with all federal and state regulations. The Director serves as the primary liaison between the school system and contracted transportation providers, manages the transportation budget, and addresses transportation-related issues with parents and principals.

Requirements

  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • BS or BA degree in technology, education, finance, business administration, public management or related field
  • Excellent oral, written and presentation, communication and negotiation skills
  • Understanding and knowledge of Transportation Routing Software
  • Ability to manage and perform business functions
  • Intermediate to advanced level PC skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with others

Responsibilities

  • Formulate specifications for regular and special education transportation contractual agreements.
  • Recommend contract changes as necessary.
  • Prepare safe and efficient bus routes and schedules for all schools.
  • Prepare and administer a transportation budget.
  • Serve as the direct liaison between the school system and contracted transportation providers.
  • Develop an accountability process with contracted transportation providers.
  • Serve as a liaison with parents and principals regarding transportation problems and special requests.
  • Attend appropriate School Committee, subcommittee, and staff meetings.
  • Maintain safety standards in accordance with federal and state regulations.
  • Conform to all state laws and regulations regarding school transportation.
  • Complete all reports required by state and other authorities.
  • Monitor the entire transportation system to ensure safe and efficient student transportation.
  • Develop and implement a system for complaint and crisis management.
  • Work closely with the Family Resource Center Manager to assign bus routes to new students.
  • Work closely with and perform other tasks as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent of Finance/School Business Administrator.
