About The Position

The Director of Quality – Transit leads the Quality organization across New Flyer Transit manufacturing operations. The role sets the direction for Transit Quality, ensures the Quality Management System is effective, develops capable teams, and works across the business to address the quality issues that have the greatest impact on customers and the business.

  • Experience setting expectations for containment, root-cause analysis, corrective action, and effectiveness checks.
  • Experience ensuring identification, containment, communication, and escalation of product, reliability, regulatory, and safety concerns.
  • Experience driving resolution of cross-plant issues and applying lessons learned.
  • Experience building constructive customer relationships and leading quality response to critical customer issues.
  • Experience providing Quality leadership for new products, major customer programs, design/process changes, production transfers, APQP, and launch readiness.
  • Experience working with Supply Chain and Supplier Development on supplier quality.
  • Experience working across departments (Manufacturing, Engineering, Supply Chain, Service, Operations, Operational Excellence) to solve problems.
  • Experience promoting quality ownership and defect prevention.
  • Experience supporting Lean and Operational Excellence principles.
  • Experience driving use of approved quality tools and process improvements.
  • Experience staying current on quality standards, methods, and industry practices.
  • Understanding of Internal Controls over Financial Reporting (ICFR).
  • Knowledge of safety, legal, regulatory, company, and internal-control requirements.
  • Knowledge of organizational quality, environmental, health & safety programs.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out the Transit quality strategy, annual goals, improvement priorities, and resource plans.
  • Ensure consistent quality measures and review processes are in place across Transit plants. Use information provided by the Quality teams to identify key trends, risks, and priorities.
  • Keep senior leadership informed about quality performance, major risks, and recovery plans, and focus resources on the issues with the greatest impact.
  • Lead the Transit plant Quality Managers and hold them accountable for results and consistent execution of the New Flyer Quality Management System.
  • Build capable, well-trained Quality teams with the right staffing. Maintain succession plans for key leadership and technical roles, identify and develop potential successors, and regularly review readiness.
  • Make sure Quality team members have the training and knowledge to identify nonconforming conditions, provide containment, prevent unintended release, and escalate unresolved concerns.
  • Carry out the responsibilities associated with being a member of the Director Leadership team.
  • Keep the Quality organization current with new technology while continuing to identify opportunities to simplify processes and improve efficiency.
  • Drive consistent use of the New Flyer Quality tools and make sure teams have the training, resources and support needed to use them effectively.
  • Lead the ongoing review and improvement of the Transit Quality Management System and support ISO 9001 registration, audits, management review, and applicable compliance requirements.
  • Set expectations for containment, root-cause analysis, corrective action, and effectiveness checks for significant or recurring issues.
  • Make sure significant product, reliability, regulatory, and potential product-safety concerns are quickly identified, contained, communicated, and escalated.
  • Drive resolution of cross-plant issues ensuring lessons learned are applied to other affected products and locations.
  • Build constructive customer relationships and lead the Quality response to critical customer issues, including customer visits when needed.
  • Provide Quality leadership for new products, major customer programs, design or process changes, production transfers, APQP, and launch readiness.
  • Work with Supply Chain and Supplier Development to prioritize supplier containment, recovery, assessments, and improvement based on business and customer risk.
  • Work across Manufacturing, Engineering, Supply Chain, Service, Operations, and Operational Excellence to clarify ownership and reach timely, lasting solutions.
  • Promote quality ownership at the source and reinforce that inspection is not a substitute for process discipline.
  • Support Lean and Operational Excellence by building defect prevention, standardized work, problem solving, and quality assurance into everyday work.
  • Drive consistent use of approved quality tools and support practical improvements to quality processes, systems, technology, and data capabilities.
  • Support cross-functional priorities and stay current on relevant quality standards, methods, and industry practices.
  • Responsible to ensure all controls (ICFR Internal Controls) identified under their area of responsibility are designed and operating as outlined in the internal controls over financial reporting.
  • Ensure applicable safety, legal, regulatory, company, and internal-control requirements are followed within the area of responsibility.
  • Ensure policies and processes are established and adhered to ensure goals and objectives for all regulatory and legal requirements are met including organizational quality, environmental, health & safety programs.
