About The Position

Alabama State University, Student Affairs, invites applications to fill the position of Director of Counseling Center. This position reports to the Associate Provost/Vice President for Student Affairs, plans, provides and direct a wide variety of administrative, counseling, consultative, evaluative and training functions, and supervises personnel engaged in providing personal, social, emotional, and psychological counseling to students.

Requirements

  • An earned Ph.D. or Ed.D in counseling, clinical psychology or an ED.S in clinical/mental health counseling, with an Alabama certification and 5 years of counseling experience.
  • A Master’s degree in clinical/mental health counseling from a Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs, 5 five years of counseling experience in a university or college setting, Alabama LPC or ACL license and 3 years of management/supervision are required.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and formulate counseling goals, procedures, and techniques and implements changes for improvement of services
  • Assign duties and responsibilities to Counseling Center staff, and supervise and evaluate their performances
  • Provides counseling intervention services to students, both those who are well-adjusted or encountering transitional and adjustment issues, that will aid in their personal development and /or growth
  • Coordinate immediate professional assistance (both on- and off-campus) to students who may be experiencing personal crises (i.e., suicide ideation, relationship issues, hospital admission, or counseling outpatient services)
  • Works closely with representatives in Housing and Residential Life, Veterans and Military Affairs, the Health Center and Disability Services, Title IX and the Violence Against Women (VAWA) program, to identify and counseling needs, referrals or outreach to student serviced directly by these offices
  • Supervise training experiences for Master’s level practicum counselors, interns and graduate students assigned to complete academic requirements in the Counseling Center
  • Identifies and makes available opportunities for staff to attend local, regional and national counseling-themed trainings and conferences
  • Represent the Counseling Center on various university, planning and policy-writing committees, and within the local, regional and national communities when requested by the university
  • Facilitate counseling training sessions and workshop for office- and campus-wide trainings
