About The Position

Price Industries is seeking an experienced mechanical consulting engineer to serve as its senior internal consultant on HVAC system design across business units. The Director of Systems Engineering will bring the perspective of a practicing consulting engineer to Price’s approach to HVAC systems, products, markets, and mechanical design. The role spans building design from system selection and load distribution through airside and hydronic design, controls, specifications, construction documents, and commissioning. Its broad mandate is to own system-level engineering strategy, lead national engagement with engineering firms and industry organizations, and translate real-world design experience into vertical-market strategies, product opportunities, engineering education, and future design tools and AI-enabled workflows. The role will help Price develop from a trusted design partner into a recognized authority in HVAC system design and application. The Director will shape building systems engineering strategy across commercial and institutional markets, including healthcare, office, education, and life sciences. This includes maintaining strategies for how products and technologies across Price business units work together in complete HVAC systems; identifying portfolio gaps and opportunities for products, technologies, partnerships, or acquisitions; and advising product strategy and development. The role will assess emerging system architectures, technologies, codes, standards, and design trends. The position will define engineering requirements for software, selection tools, and AI-enabled design workflows. It will document mechanical engineers’ project workflows from concept through completion and translate engineering judgment, design rules, and processes into requirements for digital tools and algorithms. The Director will collaborate with software, product management, applications, research, and engineering teams to ensure tools reflect real-world engineering practice. The Director will lead Price’s national technical engagement with consulting engineering firms alongside Sales and Price representatives, represent Price in relevant industry and research organizations, and build relationships with engineering leaders, researchers, and industry experts. The role will turn industry insights into recommendations and establish priorities for technical contributions such as applied research, guidance, presentations, white papers, and standards concerning comfort, energy, acoustics, indoor air quality, controls, and building performance. The role will also help develop technical education for consulting engineers, contribute real-world examples and engineering judgment to external education programs, and serve as a system-level subject matter expert for internal training of Application Engineers, Product Managers, Technical Sales teams, and other engineering personnel. The position is based in the Atlanta area with a hybrid schedule of approximately three days per week in the office and approximately 25% travel across the United States and Canada.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE).
  • At least 10 years of mechanical consulting engineering experience focused on commercial and institutional buildings.
  • Significant experience designing HVAC systems and producing mechanical construction documents.
  • Strong understanding of the complete mechanical design process, from concept and schematic design through construction administration.
  • Technical expertise in variable air volume systems.
  • Technical expertise in commercial air distribution systems.
  • Technical expertise in chilled- and hot-water hydronic distribution systems, including terminal equipment selection and design.
  • Ability to evaluate HVAC performance and system-selection trade-offs at the room, system, and building levels.
  • Familiarity with energy-efficiency code requirements and rating tools.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to explain complex engineering concepts to engineers, product teams, software developers, salespeople, and senior executives.
  • Willingness to work a hybrid schedule from the Atlanta area, approximately three days per week in the office.
  • Ability and willingness to travel approximately 25% across the United States and Canada.

Nice To Haves

  • Engineer of Record experience, including personal responsibility for signing and sealing mechanical designs.
  • Approximately 10–15 or more years of experience with a highly regarded mechanical or multidisciplinary consulting engineering firm.
  • Experience designing multiple building types or vertical markets.
  • Experience with central air-handling systems, terminal units, reheat, fan coils, DOAS, controls, energy recovery, and other common commercial HVAC architectures.
  • Experience mentoring engineers or developing technical standards, design guides, or internal engineering practices.
  • Experience presenting to clients, owners, architects, contractors, or other engineers.
  • Participation in ASHRAE, I2SL, EEBC, BOMA, or other relevant industry organizations.
  • Interest in building science, applied research, engineering software, computational design, or artificial intelligence.
  • Curiosity about why engineers design systems as they do and how those workflows could be improved.

Responsibilities

  • Own and maintain system-level engineering strategies for how Price products and technologies across business units fit into complete HVAC systems.
  • Apply mechanical system design knowledge across commercial and institutional vertical markets, including healthcare, office, education, and life sciences.
  • Identify and prioritize portfolio gaps and opportunities for new products, technologies, partnerships, or acquisitions.
  • Translate consulting engineers’ perspectives into system-level recommendations for product strategy and new product development.
  • Evaluate emerging HVAC system architectures, technologies, codes, standards, and design trends and make actionable recommendations.
  • Define engineering requirements and serve as a subject matter expert for engineering software, selection tools, and AI-enabled design workflows.
  • Document mechanical engineering project workflows from concept through completion, including system selection, zoning, equipment sizing, distribution design, schedules, specifications, and construction documents.
  • Translate engineering judgment, design rules, and workflows into requirements for scalable digital tools and algorithms.
  • Partner with software, product management, applications, research, and engineering teams to ensure tools reflect and enhance real-world engineering practice.
  • Lead national technical engagement with consulting engineering firms in coordination with Sales and Price representatives.
  • Represent Price Industries in relevant industry organizations and research communities, such as ASHRAE and the Center for the Built Environment.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with engineering leaders, researchers, and industry experts, and synthesize insights into recommendations for relevant teams.
  • Set priorities for Price’s system-level technical contributions through applied research, technical guidance, presentations, white papers, and industry standards.
  • Partner with Training and Product teams to define technical content for consulting engineer education.
  • Contribute real-world design examples, lessons learned, and engineering judgment to external education programs.
  • Provide system-level expertise for internal training of Application Engineers, Product Managers, Technical Sales teams, and other engineering personnel.
  • Build internal understanding of consulting engineers’ HVAC design practices and how Price products fit into complete systems.
