About The Position

The Director of Surgical Services provides strategic and operational leadership for Thomas Eye Group's Ambulatory Surgery Centers, functioning under the direct supervision of the Chief Operating Officer, in close partnership with TEG's Medical Director. This role is accountable for the full scope of ASC performance — clinical quality and patient safety, regulatory and accreditation compliance, financial and operational results, physician relationships, and organizational growth. The Director coordinates the delivery of patient care, designs appropriate staffing ratios, and oversees the hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of all surgical team members, while also driving case volume growth, managing the center's P&L, and partnering with TEG leadership and physicians on strategic initiatives, workflow redesign, and marketing. The Director provides regular, frequent communication and feedback to team members and TEG leadership, and is responsible for delivering excellent customer service and patient care throughout the surgical services continuum.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree, BSN, or RN preferred, or equivalent experience; MBA preferred.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in an ASC and five years of progressive management/supervisory experience preferred (minimum of four years of supervisory/management experience required).
  • Experience building OR sites and expanding surgical service lines is highly valued.
  • Current principles, practices, techniques, policies, and procedures of nursing theory, practice, and management.
  • Health care practices, procedures, terminology, and technology as it relates to nursing and surgeon practices.
  • Current clinical nursing standards of care in the Operating Room and throughout the organization.
  • Knowledge of State, Federal, and AAAHC regulations and standards related to healthcare.
  • Principles and practices of effective management, supervision, and leadership.
  • Principles and practices of quality assurance guidelines as they relate to the healthcare field, including control and evaluation.
  • Safety policies, procedures, and practices as they relate to nursing.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports, and to analyze situations accurately and adopt an efficient course of action.
  • Competency in Microsoft Office systems.
  • Excellent leadership skills, with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, staff, and physicians.
  • Willingness to participate in goal-setting and educational activities for personal professional advancement and that of others, with evidence of continuing education directly related to the job.

Responsibilities

  • Owns and is accountable for organic top-line growth through increased case volume, strategic service line growth, new physician recruitment, and expanded volume from existing physicians.
  • Designs and executes physician recruitment and marketing programs in partnership with physicians, medical groups, health system partners, local employers, and third-party payers.
  • Initiates, develops, and maintains strong physician relationships to support top-line growth, governance, and confidence in Thomas Eye Group as a preferred partner.
  • Recommends, develops, and executes short- and long-term strategic plans that drive best-in-class clinical, financial, and operational results.
  • Partners with the COO, and other TEG leaders to design and implement growth initiatives and operational effectiveness opportunities.
  • Collaborates with TEG Administration and physicians to identify future opportunities and define the strategic direction of the ASC, including OR efficiency, productivity, and patient throughput targets.
  • Develops and sustains an environment that supports excellence and innovation in clinical nursing practice and patient care, through assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating programs and standards that support positive patient outcomes.
  • Coordinates the delivery of patient care, the development of pertinent training and education, and the design of appropriate staffing ratios.
  • Proactively seeks opportunities for efficient, high-quality patient care and leads operational excellence across the ASC.
  • Coordinates activity within the O.R. suite and assists surgeons through the provision of adequately prepared service team members.
  • Assures that systems are in place to comply with State, Federal, and AAAHC standards.
  • Maintains an ongoing departmental Quality Improvement Plan consistent with the organizational Quality Management Plan, and assures interdisciplinary performance improvement programs.
  • Serves as Risk Manager Designee.
  • Carries out all business functions related to the ASC and associated projects, such as workflow redesign, implementation, and marketing.
  • Responsible for the center's P&L, including managing financial controls and reporting.
  • Contributes to the development and manages the operating budget, capital budget, and financial projections to meet established goals.
  • Reviews financial reports and makes modifications to reduce costs associated with supplies, staffing, and service agreements, or identifies sound alternatives for purchasing equipment and supplies.
  • Oversees the fiscal management of the facility by partnering with the Revenue Cycle Manager to ensure effective billing, collection, appeals, and accounts payable management.
  • Implements and maintains annual strategic business plans that best serve the market dynamics and organizational goals.
  • Performs the full range of staff management functions, including interviewing, hiring, evaluating, counseling, and terminating assigned management and support staff.
  • Delegates responsibilities and duties to professional, technical, and ancillary personnel, with authority and accountability consistent with professional standards and organizational policy.
  • Conducts timely performance evaluations for all department personnel.
  • Provides coaching, mentoring, support, and consultation to managers and staff; participates in regular leadership development and builds leadership capability among facility managers.
  • Motivates and empowers facility employees to meet the facility's mission and purpose.
  • Facilitates appropriate working relationships with the Governing Board, Partners, Medical Staff, department leaders, facility staff, patients, and family members.
  • Provides regular and frequent feedback and meetings to team members and TEG leadership.
  • Develops and sustains an environment that supports excellence and innovation in clinical nursing practice and patient care.
