About The Position

The Director of Surgery is a Registered Nurse responsible for planning, directing, and supervising the functions, activities, and personnel of the Operating Room (OR). This role involves establishing standards, policies, and procedures, managing departmental objectives, budget, and major purchase priorities. The Director also ensures the availability of essential equipment and supplies, maintains compliance with established principles and policies, and manages departmental records. The position requires the ability to perform RN duties in other departments as needed and to maintain good employee relationships. The Director participates in hospital committees, including the Continuous Quality Improvement Committee, and stays current in surgical nursing practices. The role also includes taking night and weekend call and assisting in total patient care within the OR suite, including circulating and scrubbing as necessary.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Registered and licensed to practice in the state of Louisiana.
  • Ability to tolerate high levels of stress.
  • Ability to get along with fellow employees on the basis of fair and impartial treatment.
  • Reliable in attendance.
  • Follows hospital policy concerning time clock, sick time, vacation time, and is punctual.

Nice To Haves

  • Up to date CPR, ACLS and PALS preferred.
  • Management or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Two years experience as an OR staff nurse.

Responsibilities

  • Keeps Director of Nurses and Administrator informed of department needs, conditions of equipment and facilities, legal aspects of surgery procedures, and policy violations.
  • Meets with Director of Nurses and Administrator to discuss departmental objectives, budget, major purchase priorities, management problems, policies, and procedures.
  • Maintains and helps develop good employee relationships in the department, hospital, and with the public, seeking staff cooperation.
  • Meets with floor nurses and consults with other departments.
  • Participates on hospital committees and projects, and in public relations.
  • Serves on the Continuous Quality Improvement Committee, assisting with infection control.
  • Serves on various nursing service committees.
  • Keeps up-to-date in the field of surgical nursing.
  • Conducts and attends in-service meetings in the department.
  • Ensures CPR, ACLS, and PALS are updated.
  • Plans, directs, and supervises functions, activities, and personnel of the OR.
  • Establishes standards, written policies, procedures, and job descriptions.
  • Completes schedules and time cards.
  • Provides essential equipment and supplies.
  • Maintains compliance with established principles and policies through inspection and observation.
  • Maintains Department records and files, inspecting for completion.
  • Takes night and weekend call as scheduled.
  • Uses established hospital and nursing hierarchical structure for problems and grievances, following procedures and policy.
  • Protects patient’s rights and maintains confidentiality of patient information and patient privacy.
  • Assists in total patient care within the OR suite, circulating and servicing as scrub nurse as necessary.
  • Assists in other areas when not needed in OR.
