About The Position

This role directs, supervises, delegates, and evaluates nursing care provided to patients. The Director is responsible for hiring, orienting, scheduling, evaluating, counseling, and recommending termination of assigned staff with HR assistance. This position requires effective communication with physicians, collaboration in patient care planning, and cost-conscious use of supplies and equipment. The Director assumes responsibility for unit fiscal management, including preparing departmental budgets for capital, FTE, and expenses. They work with Quality to ensure compliance with DOH and/or DNV regulations, ensuring quality patient care and acting on identified problems. Collaboration with other departments enhances the Employee Experience, and the Director works with Guest Relations and Quality to resolve patient grievances. The role involves staying apprised of strategic goals, establishing short and long-term goals for the Surgery Department, and attending necessary meetings. This position serves as a liaison between nursing, patients, families, physicians, and the community, promoting a cooperative team environment. The Director acts as a clinical and managerial resource, coaching and mentoring staff, and participating in the orientation of new staff and students. Professional development and continuing education are key, including identifying staff development and recredentialing needs and coordinating programs. Routine inspections of facilities ensure policy and procedure adherence. The Director coordinates emergency measures for codes and disasters, conducts unit meetings, and performs other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • Professional knowledge of nursing theory and practice at a level normally acquired through completion of an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Current State Nursing License.
  • BSN.
  • At least five years recent clinical experience in nursing leadership.
  • Communication skills necessary to effectively provide instruction, explanations, and communicate with the health team.
  • Analytical skills necessary to develop and implement a plan for nursing care and solve problems.
  • Ability to concentrate and prioritize, plan and perform professional nursing care, resolve patient care problems, and interact with patients, families, and other team members.
  • Mental Requirements: Remembering, reasoning, critical thinking, understanding, problem solving capabilities, emotionally stable.
  • Ability to make rounds.
  • Must independently be able to respond to an emergency situation.
  • Ability to see and hear with or without mechanical aides.
  • Ability to manage patient care unit.
  • Must be able to use the following Management Accountabilities/ Competencies: conflict resolution, staff counseling, problem solving, disciplinary process, policy and procedure implementation, teamwork, staff scheduling, support of management peers, interviewing, budgeting process, cost containment skills.
  • Current BLS Healthcare Provider card.

Responsibilities

  • Attends meetings as necessary.
  • Serves as a liaison between nursing, patient, patient’s family, physician and surrounding community.
  • Promotes an environment in which the care team can work cooperatively.
  • Seeks assistance from appropriate resource persons as necessary in solving clinical and management problems.
  • Ensures that patient care is provided according to policy, procedure and patient care standards.
  • Functions as clinical and managerial resource to guide and validates the independent decision making of the staff.
  • Coaches and mentors staff.
  • Participates in the orientation of new staff and in the clinical experience of staff and students.
  • Assumes personal responsibility for professional development and continuing education.
  • Identifies staff development needs and recredentialing needs and coordinates programs to meet those needs.
  • Makes routine inspections of facilities to assure that established policies and procedures are being implemented and followed.
  • Coordinates or institutes emergency measures for all codes and disasters occurring on her/his unit.
  • Conducts unit meetings with staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by authorized personnel as may be required.
