About The Position

The Director of Surgery and Central Processing is responsible for directing, supervising, delegating, and evaluating nursing care provided to patients. This role involves hiring, orienting, scheduling, evaluating, counseling, and recommending termination of assigned staff, with assistance from Human Resources. The Director effectively communicates with physicians, collaborates on patient care plans, and demonstrates cost-conscious use of supplies and equipment maintenance. This position assumes responsibility for unit fiscal management, including preparing departmental Capital, FTE, and Expense budgets in cooperation with Materials Management and Accounting. The Director ensures quality patient care by following up on action plans and new implementations per DOH and/or DNV regulations, acting on identified problems, and providing feedback. They collaborate with departments to enhance the Employee Experience and work closely with Guest Relations and the Quality Department to ensure timely resolution to patient grievances. The Director stays apprised of the CNE’s and Organization’s annual strategic goals and establishes the short and long-term goals of the Surgery Department. They attend meetings as necessary, serve as a liaison between nursing, patients, families, physicians, and the community, and promote a cooperative team environment. The Director seeks assistance from appropriate resources for clinical and management problems, ensures patient care aligns with policies and standards, and functions as a clinical and managerial resource to guide staff decision-making. They coach and mentor staff, participate in new staff orientation and the clinical experience of staff and students, and assume personal responsibility for professional development and continuing education. The Director identifies staff development and recredentialing needs and coordinates programs to meet them. Routine inspections of facilities are conducted to ensure policy and procedure implementation. Emergency measures for codes and disasters are coordinated or instituted, and unit meetings are conducted with staff. Other duties as assigned by authorized personnel may be required.

Requirements

  • Professional knowledge of nursing theory and practice at a level normally acquired through completion of an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Current State Nursing License.
  • BSN required.
  • At least five years recent clinical experience in nursing leadership.
  • Communication skills necessary to effectively: Provide instruction to the surgeon, anesthesia, surgical staff, patient and/or significant other; Provide explanations to the patient and/or significant other; Explain nursing intervention; Communicate with other members of the health team.
  • Physical Requirements: Talking, telephone use, hearing, ability to use the computer.
  • Analytical skills necessary to develop and implement a plan for nursing care appropriate to the patient, and to solve problems concerning patient’s mental or physical well-being.
  • Ability to concentrate and prioritize, plan and perform professional nursing care, resolve patient care problems, and interact with patients, families, and other team members - often during stressful situations.
  • Mental Requirements: Remembering, reasoning, critical thinking, understanding, problem solving capabilities, emotionally stable.
  • Ability to make rounds.
  • Must independently be able to respond to an emergency situation.
  • Physical requirements: Lifting, reaching, walking, carrying, pushing, pulling.
  • Ability to see and hear with or without mechanical aides.
  • Ability to manage patient care unit.
  • Must be able to use the following Management Accountabilities/ Competencies: conflict resolution, staff counseling, problem solving, disciplinary process, policy and procedure implementation, teamwork, staff scheduling, support of management peers, interviewing, budgeting process, cost containment skills.
  • Current BLS Healthcare Provider card.

Responsibilities

  • Works closely with Guest Relations and the Quality Department to ensure timely resolution to patient grievances.

  • Ensures that patient care is provided according to policy, procedure and patient care standards specific to the unit.
  • Functions as clinical and managerial resource to guide and validates the independent decision making of the staff.
  • Coaches and mentors staff.
  • Participates in the orientation of new staff and in the clinical experience of staff and students.
  • Assumes personal responsibility for professional development and continuing education.
  • Identifies staff development needs and recredentialing needs and coordinates programs to meet those needs.
  • Makes routine inspections of facilities to assure that established policies and procedures are being implemented and followed.
  • Coordinates or institutes emergency measures for all codes and disasters occurring on her/his unit.
  • Conducts unit meetings with staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by authorized personnel as may be required.
