About The Position

Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida (BGCCF) is seeking a Director of Sports & Athletics to provide strategic and operational leadership for its sports league and athletics program. This is a newly created position responsible for building the program from the ground up, including league structure, season calendars, sport offerings, coaching standards, game-day operations, officiating, safety protocols, equipment and facility planning, and participant registration systems. The Director will report to the Regional Director of Club Operations, supervise Sports Coaches and referees, and collaborate with Club Service Directors and leadership to ensure high-quality athletics programming. The role champions positive youth development through sport, promoting sportsmanship, character, teamwork, inclusion, physical wellness, and academic and personal growth. The Director will also serve as the organization’s subject-matter expert on youth athletics and build relationships with external partners to expand access, participation, and program sustainability.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Sports Management, Physical Education, Recreation, Education, Business Administration, or a related field required; or an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience.
• Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in youth sports, athletics, recreation, or physical education programming, including hands-on instruction or coaching.
• Minimum of two years of supervisory experience, including hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluating staff, officials, or volunteers.
• Demonstrated experience designing, launching, or managing sports leagues, tournaments, clinics, or camps, including scheduling and game-day operations.
• Demonstrated experience developing and managing program budgets, equipment inventories, and vendor or facility relationships.
• CPR, AED, and First Aid certification required within 30 days of hire and maintained throughout employment.
• Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record and consistent access to a reliable, properly insured vehicle required.
• Extensive knowledge of youth sports, age-appropriate skill development, rules of play, league administration, and the youth sports landscape.
• Strong program development skills, with the ability to build new programs, systems, and standards where none previously existed.
• Excellent organizational and project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple sites, seasons, schedules, and deadlines simultaneously with accuracy.
• Strong leadership and coaching skills, with the ability to develop staff, officials, and volunteers and to lead through influence across multiple Club teams.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with youth, families, staff, officials, executives, school partners, and sponsors.
• Sound judgment and strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to remain calm and decisive during games, events, injuries, and conflicts.
• Working knowledge of risk management, child safety, and supervision practices in youth-serving and athletic settings.
• Ability to analyze participation, attendance, and financial data and translate findings into program decisions.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams) and the ability to learn and administer registration, scheduling, membership, and program data platforms.
• High level of integrity, ethical judgment, and discretion in handling confidential and sensitive information.
• Ability to work independently, take ownership of outcomes, and proactively move work forward with minimal supervision.
• Candidates must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screening.

• Continued employment is also contingent on the Florida State Department of Children and Families’ employment designation of “eligible for employment” as a state-licensed youth-serving organization.

• Possesses sufficient physical strength, agility, stamina, and mobility to perform the essential functions of the position, demonstrate athletic skills, supervise program activities, and respond to emergencies.
• Required to walk, stand, run, kneel, stoop, bend, reach, push, pull, and lift or move up to 50 pounds, including athletic equipment, goals, mats, and supplies.
• Must be able to stand and remain active for extended periods during practices, games, tournaments, and events, both indoors and outdoors.
• Physically able to successfully complete and maintain all required certifications, including CPR, AED, and First Aid.
• Operates a computer and other office productivity equipment such as a copy machine, phone, printer, and tablet frequently, including tasks that involve repetitive motion, visual focus, and fine motor skills.
• Visual acuity, including close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus, and auditory acuity sufficient to monitor participants, playing conditions, and the surrounding environment and ensure safety standards are maintained.
• Mental resilience and the ability to stay focused, calm, and effective in busy, noisy, and fast-changing environments.
• Capacity to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, prioritize effectively, and maintain attention to detail during continuous operations.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

• Design, launch, and continuously improve BGCCF’s sports league and athletics program model, including sport selection, age and skill divisions, season structure, practice and game schedules, rules of play, standings, and end-of-season events.
• Develop and maintain the organization-wide athletics calendar, coordinating seasons, tryouts or team formation, practices, game days, tournaments, clinics, camps, and special events across all Club sites.
• Establish standardized program curricula, practice plans, skill progressions, and coaching guides that ensure age-appropriate, developmentally sound instruction and consistent delivery at target Clubs.
• Manage participant registration, rosters, team assignments, waivers, eligibility verification, and league communications, ensuring accurate and timely records.
• Coordinate game-day operations, including venue setup, officiating assignments, scorekeeping, spectator management, concessions or event logistics as applicable, and post-game facility restoration.
• Plan and manage league expansion, new sport offerings, and seasonal program adjustments based on participation data, member interest, facility capacity, and available resources.
• Lead or assist in delivering practices, clinics, and instructional sessions as needed to maintain program continuity and quality.
• Establish and enforce athletics safety standards, including participant supervision ratios, emergency action plans, injury and incident reporting, concussion and heat-illness protocols, hydration and rest requirements, and equipment inspection procedures.
• Ensure all program venues, courts, fields, gymnasiums, and equipment are safe, properly maintained, and appropriate for the age and activity level of participants prior to each use.
• Monitor program quality through regular site visits, practice and game observations, participant and family feedback, and structured coaching feedback and follow-up.
• Ensure compliance with BGCCF safety and child-protection policies, licensing requirements, state and local regulations, and applicable youth sports governing-body standards.
• Ensure all coaches, referees, and program volunteers complete required background screening, abuse risk management training, CPR/First Aid certification, and sport-specific training before working with youth.
• Develop and implement a code of conduct and behavior expectations for participants, coaches, officials, spectators, and families, and address violations promptly and consistently.
• Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise, coach, and evaluate Sports Coaches and game-day referees, establishing clear performance expectations, priorities, and professional development plans.
• Build and maintain a qualified pool of coaches, officials, and volunteers sufficient to staff all leagues, practices, and game days across Club sites, including substitute and seasonal coverage procedures.
• Deliver consistent onboarding and ongoing training on instructional technique, rules interpretation, positive coaching practices, behavior management, safety protocols, and BGCCF standards.
• Conduct regular observations, evaluations, and feedback sessions, recognizing strong performance and addressing performance concerns in partnership with Human Resources.
• Manage staff scheduling, timekeeping accuracy, and overtime controls in accordance with organizational timekeeping and wage-and-hour policies; ensure part-time and seasonal staff hours are approved in advance.
• Foster a culture of accountability, sportsmanship, inclusion, and exceptional service to members and families.
• Partner with Club Service Directors, Regional Director of Club Operations, and BGCCF leadership to integrate athletics programming into daily Club schedules, program space, transportation plans, and member engagement strategies.
• Maintain a regular feedback loop with the Regional Director of Club Operations and Club leadership regarding facility and space utilization, participation trends, staffing needs, and family feedback.
• Collaborate with Program, Membership, Facilities, Transportation, Human Resources, Finance, and Grants colleagues to align athletics programming with organizational priorities, funder requirements, and operational capacity.
• Provide guidance, training, and technical assistance to Club staff supporting athletics activities at their sites.
• Track and report participation, enrollment, attendance, retention, and program utilization by Club and by sport, monitoring performance month over month and season over season.
• Maintain accurate program records and rosters in designated registration, membership, and program data platforms, ensuring data integrity and timely entry.
• Analyze participation and outcome data to identify trends, gaps, and growth opportunities, and use findings to revise schedules, offerings, and staffing plans.
• Prepare regular program reports, dashboards, and season summaries for the Regional Director of Club Operations and organizational leadership.
• Provide program data, outcomes, and narrative content to support grant applications, funder reports, sponsorship proposals, and Board reporting.
• Develop and manage the athletics program budget, including personnel, officials, uniforms, equipment, awards, facility rentals, transportation, and event costs, monitoring performance against plan.
• Recommend program fees, scholarship approaches, and cost-management strategies that support access, participation, and long-term program sustainability.
• Manage procurement, distribution, inventory, storage, and replacement of uniforms, athletic equipment, and program supplies across all Club sites in accordance with BGCCF purchasing policy.
• Negotiate and manage relationships with vendors, officials’ associations, facility partners, and service providers, and support contract and agreement processes in coordination with organizational leadership.
• Build and maintain relationships with schools, athletic associations, municipal recreation departments, youth sports organizations, sponsors, and community partners to secure facilities, expand participation, and strengthen programming.
• Cultivate sponsorship and in-kind support opportunities for leagues, teams, tournaments, and events in coordination with Resource Development and organizational leadership.
• Partner with the Marketing team to develop registration campaigns, promotional materials, and season communications, and provide Club leadership with materials to promote athletics locally.
• Engage families through clear, timely communication regarding schedules, expectations, participant progress, and program changes, and respond professionally to participant and family concerns.
• Represent BGCCF at league meetings, community events, tournaments, and partner functions related to youth athletics.
• Support organizational fundraising and special events, including athletics-focused community and family events.
• Promote a culture of high expectations, positive youth development, and academic and personal growth through participation in sport.
• Safeguard confidential member, family, and personnel information and ensure compliance with data privacy and records retention requirements.
• Maintain and update job knowledge by participating in training and educational opportunities, reading professional publications, and engaging in relevant professional organizations.
• Perform other duties as assigned that are consistent with the role and aligned with BGCCF’s mission and values.
• Supervise, hire, train, schedule, coach, and evaluate Sports Coaches and game-day referees/officials, including seasonal and part-time staff and program volunteers.
• Provide program direction, training, and technical assistance to Club staff supporting athletics activities at their assigned Club sites, in coordination with Club Service Directors.
• Adhere to all BGCCF policies related to appropriate boundaries with Club members and program participants.
• Complete all required child safety and abuse risk management training and ensure supervised staff, officials, and volunteers do the same.
• Follow established procedures for supervising participants and managing higher-risk activities, including transitions, transportation, locker rooms, and off-site venues.
• Report suspicious or inappropriate behavior and policy violations promptly, and comply with all mandated reporting requirements.
