About The Position

The Director of Special Education is responsible for organizing, implementing, and administering a program of special needs services for the District’s students. This role serves as the Administrator of Special Education for the Southeastern Regional School District, supervising and evaluating the Special Education Department's instructional and support staff. The Director will coordinate MEDICAID services and attend relevant school committee meetings. Key responsibilities include maintaining accurate student records, monitoring Special Education laws and regulations, developing an educational assessment program, and ensuring compliance with state regulations. The Director will also work with administrators to develop curriculum, coordinate accommodations for assessments, manage equipment and materials, make appropriate placements, and provide in-service training. Budget development and management, grant writing, and implementing the Special Education component of the Bullying Intervention Plan are also crucial aspects of this position. The role requires assisting in writing federal grants, preparing statistical reports, and staying current with Department of Elementary and Secondary Education requirements. Professional development and other duties assigned by the Superintendent are also part of the role.

Requirements

  • A minimum of a Master’s Degree in Special Education or related field from an accredited college.
  • Certification by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education as an Administrator of Special Education.
  • Highly motivated self-starter who can work independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state statutes, laws, and regulations pertaining to Special Education.
  • Prior experience as a Special Education Director in a vocational technical school is preferred.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as Administrator of Special Education for the Southeastern Regional School District.
  • Supervises and evaluates the Special Education Department instructional and support staff.
  • Organizes, administers and coordinates a program of Special Needs Services for Southeastern students in cooperation with the Director of Guidance.
  • Coordinates MEDICAID services.
  • Attends school committee meetings and appropriate subcommittee meetings when required.
  • Organizes, administers and coordinates Special Education (SPED) programs.
  • Maintains complete and accurate student records in compliance with all applicable federal and state laws and regulations and district policy.
  • Monitors Special Education laws and regulations and recommends required policies and procedures.
  • Develops and coordinates an educational assessment program for Special Education students.
  • Ensures that Special Education programs conform to all Department of Elementary and Secondary Education regulations.
  • Works in cooperation with the Principal and high school administrators to develop a curriculum to meet the needs of students as defined by M.G.L. Chapter 71B.
  • Coordinates students’ Special Education accommodations for all assessments (e.g., MCAS, SAT, and various industry certifications).
  • Provides and evaluates the effective utilization of equipment and materials used by Special Education staff.
  • Makes appropriate placements for Special Education students.
  • Coordinates scheduling of Special Education Plans.
  • Provides in-service programs and orientation sessions for staff members concerning Special Education services in the school as required by law.
  • Develops an annual departmental budget in coordination with the High School Principal.
  • Monitors the departmental budget on an ongoing basis.
  • Writes a Special Education Program Plan and federal and state grants for Special Education.
  • Organizes and implements a Parent Advisory Committee for Special Education.
  • Implements the Special Education component of the Bullying Intervention Plan and behavioral support plans.
  • Assists in writing grants to improve achievement for Southeastern students.
  • Develops and maintains student information to prepare statistical reports concerning Special Education.
  • Completes all statistical reports requiring Special Education student information for the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
  • Remains current with the requirements of the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
  • Assists in analyzing MCAS test results.
  • Establishes objectives resulting in a continuing program of professional development.
  • Maintains professional renewal through reading, visitations, conference attendance, university programs and professional organizations.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
