About The Position

The Learning Community, a vibrant public charter school that centers the voices of students, families, and teachers seeks a collaborative, dedicated Director of Special Education passionate about providing the quality of instruction and additional support needed for students with learning disabilities to thrive in our school. There is part-time administrative support provided for this role. In addition to clerical support, there will also be support in LEAing meetings with a special educator case manager.

Requirements

  • RI certification for district level director of special education.
  • U.S. citizen or resident or possess work visas.
  • Deep knowledge and experience in managing a Special Education program with a clear vision for equity.
  • Deep mastery of relevant legal requirements and best practices for compliance and delivery of Special Education services for K-8 students with a wide range of disabilities and support needs.
  • Leveraging research-based interventions and translating vision into action.
  • A strong lens on equity and inclusion as it relates to work in special education.
  • A strong understanding of how inequity shows up in special education and general education settings.
  • An inclusive approach to communicating with and engaging families across lines of race and other dimensions of identity difference.
  • Superb time-management and organizational skills to manage multiple compliance and programmatic deadlines and track student progress.
  • Ability to project manage others to advance their work.
  • Professionalism and strong follow-through: delivering high-quality, thorough work on time, or communicating proactively if a commitment will be missed or support is needed.
  • Effective communication, trust-building, and influencing skills to build high-trust relationships and find workable solutions.
  • Strong abilities to educate and develop others, including families, leaders, teachers, and other staff.
  • Ability to deliver engaging and actionable training in areas of expertise.

Responsibilities

  • Oversight of the special education program, ensuring compliance and delivery of promised outcomes, including consistent IEP service delivery, timely documentation, and family meetings with translation support as needed. Oversees transportation and logistics for outplacement services.
  • Ensuring appropriate scaffolds, interventions, and supports for students with IEPs in all aspects of their learning, from daily instruction to standardized assessments.
  • Coaching and supporting Special Education teachers and others interfacing with special education students through observation, training, skill-building, feedback, professional development planning, and disseminating best practices.
  • Evaluating students for services, running Kindergarten intakes, and ensuring intervention systems and data tracking for student progress are accurate and up-to-date.
  • Ensuring state testing, including accommodations for special populations, is administered according to state mandates, collaborating with other directors for coordination and training.
  • Coordination and oversight of any Extended School Year (ESY) programs.
