About The Position

Luna Health is a venture-backed medical device startup focused on bringing insulin automation to the masses. We aim to simplify and enhance the lives of individuals with insulin-requiring diabetes through innovative hardware and software. Our unique product combines a compact patch pump with a novel closed-loop algorithm for nighttime glucose control, automatically adjusting insulin doses to improve sleep quality and reduce daily worries for users. We are seeking a Director of Software to lead and grow our software team during a critical growth phase. This role involves people management, strategic planning, technical leadership, and driving AI-enabled workflows to deliver a best-in-class product. The position is on-site in San Diego, CA.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 10–15+ years of experience in software development.
  • 5+ years of experience managing technical teams.
  • Experience in a regulated industry, ensuring data integrity, audit trails, and reliability for patient safety.
  • Experience designing and shipping mobile apps and cloud backends end-to-end.
  • Proficiency in modern DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, and automation test frameworks.
  • Ability to align multi-year technology roadmaps with core business goals.
  • Familiarity with frontier AI models and using AI for coding and productivity acceleration.
  • Proven ability to lead and grow a small, senior engineering team.
  • Experience mentoring individuals and hiring with a high bar.
  • Track record of clear communication and effective cross-functional collaboration.
  • Experience representing software credibly with executive leadership.
  • Competency in owning a team budget and allocating resources.
  • Ability to hold delivery timelines.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior medical device or other safety-critical software experience.
  • Ability to apply safe AI practices in a regulated environment, ensuring human judgment remains ultimately responsible and accountable.

Responsibilities

  • Define and build a scalable software team, establishing a robust hiring process.
  • Interface with the executive team and board on technology matters.
  • Mentor engineers, guide their career growth, and act as a technical collaborator.
  • Foster a positive, safe, and productive work environment where engineers can thrive.
  • Drive continuous improvement in software development workflows from idea to release.
  • Reinforce high coding standards, efficient workflows, and leverage AI tools.
  • Ensure the team prioritizes effectively and adapts to challenges.
  • Represent software in cross-functional collaborations with hardware, data science, regulatory, and executive teams.
  • Stay technically hands-on, participating in prototyping, code reviews, and implementation.
  • Translate high-level vision and strategic goals into actionable software plans and roadmaps.
  • Develop short-term and long-term technology roadmaps in collaboration with product management and engineering.
  • Manage competing demands and ensure company needs are met through resourcefulness and organization.
