Director of Risk & Controls | Bankrate

Red Ventures
•$150,000 - $225,000•Remote

About The Position

The Director of Risk & Controls will establish Bankrate's enterprise-grade risk and controls function from scratch. As the first line of defense embedded in the business, this role owns the day-to-day execution of risk mitigation, controls, and governance, working alongside the independent Compliance function and Legal. Legal retains responsibility for legal judgment calls, contract negotiation, and external counsel. The role has direct visibility to the executive leadership team and will use AI tools to scale the function. The position builds the risk and controls foundation needed as Bankrate pursues deeper enterprise partnerships, expands its mortgage brokering footprint across more states, and prepares its risk posture for an eventual exit. The initial first-line-of-defense program will begin with Mortgages.

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of progressive experience in risk, compliance, or control management.
  • Financial services experience.
  • Proven ability to project-manage complex, cross-functional initiatives and drive them to completion through influential communication.
  • A proven track record of using AI as a productivity tool, including building agentic workflows for repetitive, multi-step job responsibilities.
  • Working knowledge of first-line and second-line risk frameworks, such as the three lines of defense, and comfort operating as the first line rather than as an arm's-length reviewer.
  • Comfort building processes, cadences, and documentation from scratch.
  • Exceptional organizational and communication skills, including the ability to drive many open workstreams and communicate progress clearly to executives.
  • Must be based in and authorized to work in the United States.

Nice To Haves

  • Consumer home loans or mortgage experience is strongly preferred.
  • Prior people management is not required; a strong individual-contributor track record is acceptable.
  • High energy, low ego, and genuine enthusiasm for an undefined, still-being-built function.

Responsibilities

  • Drive Bankrate's monthly Risk & Compliance Committee by setting the agenda, tracking outstanding follow-ups, and holding the executive leadership team accountable for open items.
  • Run governance for bi-weekly Risk & Compliance meetings, including setting agendas and tracking follow-ups.
  • Respond to quarterly risk assessments, partner with Legal & Compliance to gather requested information, and project-manage the resulting mitigation roadmap with the business.
  • Project-manage governance initiatives and ensure proper documentation, including maintaining a historical archive.
  • Use AI to design and establish Bankrate's first-line-of-defense program, beginning with Mortgages, and monitor and test ongoing business compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Manage third-party due diligence requests, including Bankrate's submissions to third parties and documentation of requests Bankrate makes to them.
  • Coordinate with the CISO/IT Security function and RV Corporate to create and refresh Bankrate's internal policy library, replacing inherited Red Ventures-branded policies with Bankrate-owned policies.
  • Validate and record Bankrate's adherence to approximately 60 internal policies.
  • Serve as Bankrate's conduit to Red Ventures' Procurement, Security, and Data Privacy processes, streamlining workflows to increase speed and mitigate risk.
  • Manage Bankrate's portfolio of existing and pursued certifications, including SOC, EcoVadis, ISO, and WCAG, across Bankrate, Red Ventures, and third parties.
  • Build AI-enabled employee compliance training, such as Fair Lending training, to replace vendor-created content and increase scale and quality.
