Director of Risk & Controls, Bankrate

Bankrate•Fort Mill, SC
•$150,000 - $225,000•Remote

About The Position

The Director of Risk & Controls will establish Bankrate's enterprise-grade risk and controls function from scratch. Embedded in the business as the first line of defense, this role owns the day-to-day execution of risk mitigation, controls, and governance, working alongside the independent Compliance function as the second line and Legal, which retains legal judgment, contract negotiation, and external counsel responsibilities. The role will build the risk and controls foundation needed as Bankrate pursues enterprise partnerships, expands mortgage brokering across more states, and prepares its risk posture for an eventual exit. It will have direct visibility to the executive leadership team and access to AI tools to scale the work. The position is fully remote within the United States and reports to the Chief Operating Officer.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of progressive risk, compliance, or control management experience.
  • Financial services experience.
  • Ability to project-manage complex, cross-functional initiatives and drive them to completion through influential communication.
  • Proven use of AI as a productivity tool, including building agentic workflows for repetitive, multi-step job responsibilities.
  • Working knowledge of first-line/second-line risk frameworks, such as the three lines of defense, and comfort operating as the first line rather than as an arm's-length reviewer.
  • Ability to build from scratch by designing processes, cadences, and documentation where none exist.
  • Exceptional organizational and communication skills, with the ability to manage many open workstreams and clearly communicate progress to executives.
  • High energy, low ego, and genuine enthusiasm for an undefined, developing function.

Nice To Haves

  • Consumer home loans or mortgage experience is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Drive the monthly Risk & Compliance Committee by setting agendas, tracking follow-ups, and holding the executive leadership team accountable for open items.
  • Run governance for bi-weekly Risk & Compliance meetings, including agenda-setting and follow-up tracking.
  • Respond to quarterly risk assessments, partnering with Legal and Compliance to gather requested information and project-manage mitigation roadmaps with the business.
  • Own project management across governance initiatives and ensure appropriate documentation, including a historical archive.
  • Use AI to design and establish Bankrate's first-line-of-defense program, starting with Mortgages, and monitor and test the business's ongoing compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Manage third-party due diligence requests, including Bankrate's submissions to third parties and documentation of requests Bankrate makes to them.
  • Coordinate with the CISO/IT Security function and RV Corporate to create and refresh Bankrate's internal policy library, replacing inherited Red Ventures-branded policies with Bankrate-owned policies.
  • Validate and record Bankrate's adherence to approximately 60 internal policies.
  • Serve as Bankrate's conduit to Red Ventures' Procurement, Security, and Data Privacy processes, streamlining workflows to increase speed and mitigate risk.
  • Manage Bankrate's portfolio of existing and pursued certifications, including SOC, EcoVadis, ISO, and WCAG, across Bankrate, Red Ventures, and third parties.
  • Build AI-enabled employee compliance training, such as Fair Lending training, to replace vendor-created content and increase scale and quality.
