About The Position

The Syracuse City School District is seeking a dedicated and diverse team of educators to partner with the Superintendent in moving the district toward its goals of ensuring all students graduate high school with the skills needed to be ready for college and career. The Director of Restorative Discipline is responsible for directing activities related to the Code of Conduct, Character, and Support, monitoring procedural safeguards requirements, conducting school audits, and self-monitoring upon request of the Chief of Student Support Services and Superintendent of Schools. This role supervises professional and support staff, maintains the student behavior database, advises hearing officers, and oversees student advocates and programs addressing the proper handling of student behavior, including students with disabilities.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in education administration, or closely related field.
  • Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) from an accredited College or University.
  • Five years successful years of supervisory or administrative experience in a PreK-12 public education setting is recommended.
  • Specific experience in the interpretation and implementation of federal and state legislation and guidelines governing student discipline and hearings.
  • Proficient in the use of technical computer applications including, but not limited to MS Office, People Soft, and database development.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills that ensure productive interaction and effective team building.
  • Excellent oral, written communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to use effective public relations, interpersonal, organizational, leadership and supervisory skills for the successful implementation of the Code of Conduct, Character, and Support.

Responsibilities

  • Plans and directs staff to conduct activities related to student discipline monitoring and compliance process.
  • Provides direction in conducting systemic audits and special investigations.
  • Directs the collection and analysis of audit documentation and preparation of audit reports.
  • Provides direction and revisions of the SCSD Code of Conduct, Character, and Support.
  • Directs compliance related activities for the Office of Student Support Services.
  • Supervises NYSED complaint corrective action monitoring.
  • Supervises complaint process including investigation, resolution, and response.
  • Participates in special projects conducted by the SCSD for the improvement of the student discipline process at the school level or system-wide.
  • Partners with the Special Education Office to appropriately service students with disabilities in the disciplinary process.
  • Provides appropriate supervision, mentoring, and professional growth and development opportunities for assigned staff.
  • Maintains and reports district-wide discipline data.
  • Leads/facilitates quarterly Discipline Data Support meetings for schools as part of progress monitoring structures and leadership training.
  • Collaborates with Student Support Services colleagues to ensure Multi-tiered System of Supports (MTSS) function effectively across SCSD schools through various tier I, II, and III structures.
  • Plans and delivers professional development for SCSD staff at all levels aligned to the SCSD Code of Conduct, Character and Support and MTSS.
  • Leads Restorative Practice trainings aligned to creating a more effective Restorative Justice Landscape across SCSD schools.
  • Coaches and supports administrators, counselors and staff in driving a culture of high achievement.
  • Ensures due process and legal compliance with all student disciplinary actions.
  • Works with other departments to track and report discipline data and provide interventions accordingly.
  • Works with school level staff to develop and implement plans for meeting School Improvement goals for culture and climate.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
