About The Position

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) is seeking a Director of Radiation Protection, who also serves as the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO), to join their Environmental Health, Safety, and Security (EHSS) leadership team. This role is responsible for leading and directing CFS's comprehensive Radiation Protection program, fostering a strong safety culture, and collaborating with other departments to implement a proactive safety approach. The position involves developing and managing the program in accordance with state and federal regulations, leading a team, investigating hazards, and liaising with regulatory agencies.

Requirements

Bachelor's or graduate degree in physical science, engineering, or biological science.
10+ years management experience.
15+ years of professional experience in health physics including at least 5+ years in applied health physics with responsibility for a major program in radiological health.
Experience working under and applying radiation regulations, specifically 105 CMR 120/10 CFR 30 (or equivalent).
Experience applying a variety of radiation monitoring techniques to different situations.
Experience writing procedures, work plans, or technical documents.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community as well as foster a cooperative work environment.
Strong project management skills.
Strong time management and organizational capabilities.
Adept at risk assessment, problem-solving, and critical thinking.
Ability to translate complex technical concepts for diverse audiences.
Capable of inspiring change, mentoring colleagues, and driving continuous improvement in a lean, fast-paced environment.
Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
Work in a facility that contains industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics.
Perform activities such as stooping, climbing, typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time.
Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call occasionally.
Must comply with U.S. laws concerning the export of controlled or protected technologies or information.

Nice To Haves

Experience with gram quantities of tritium (either use or oversight).
Experience working under a broad scope license.
Experience with radiation facility lifecycle - design, licensing, operation, and decommissioning.
CHP (Certified Health Physicist).
Knowledge of radiation control, radiological health, environmental laws and regulations, and radiation safety practices and techniques.

Responsibilities

Serve as the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) for the CFS Broad Scope License and provide leadership in all areas radiation is used.
Develop the CFS Radiation Protection Program in accordance with state and federal radiation regulations, with oversight from the Radiation Safety Committee.
Lead and manage the Radiation Protection Team, including recruitment, selection, management, development, and assessment of staff.
Manage and assess the Radiation Protection Program for technical adequacy, ensuring compliance with Standard Operating Procedures, Licensing Commitments, and Regulatory Requirements. Perform or oversee annual program assessments.
Conduct incident and exposure investigations, develop corrective actions plans, and ensure appropriate follow-up, recording, and reporting to the Radiation Safety Committee and/or regulatory authorities.
Prepare reports and maintain records of program operations for inspection by regulatory agencies.
Liaise with Regulatory Agencies and Professional Societies, participate in standards setting, education, and regulatory development, and stay apprised of regulatory changes. Responsible for all radiological correspondence with state and federal agencies.
Support community outreach efforts by representing CFS at various meetings, committees, and task forces.
Plan and implement short and long-term strategy and direction for the Radiation Protection Program consistent with overall EHSS mission and strategic goals.
Prepare and track budget and staffing levels for program operations.
Understand the structure and function of all areas of EHSS, and maintain familiarity with, lead, and participate in emergency cross-training procedures.
Lead or support cross-functional teams, special projects, and perform other duties as assigned.
