About The Position

The Director of Production is responsible for overseeing all technical aspects of client events and concerts at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center (SSC) and at off-site Nashville Symphony performances. This role ensures the highest quality of events and concerts, produced efficiently in accordance with established guidelines for planning, communication, cost, and scheduling. The Director will manage the production team's scheduling and advancement for various events, including lighting, audio, video, and staging, and supervise technical staff for concerts, special events, and maintenance activities. This position involves performing event and concert-related duties such as stage management, lighting, audio, and carpentry, as well as supervising and booking labor. The Director will interpret technical riders, advance touring production needs, lead production-related meetings, create stage plots using CAD software, and maintain technical equipment and facilities. Budget management, including tracking expenses, preparing event billing, and submitting payrolls for part-time staff, is also a key responsibility. Furthermore, the Director is responsible for recruiting, hiring, training, and evaluating production crew members, ensuring safety compliance, and may be required to drive a box truck and operate a forklift. The Director supervises the Audio Director, Production Manager, Assistant Production Manager, Orchestra Stage Manager, Sr. Lighting Director, and part-time production labor, carrying out all supervisory responsibilities in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws.

Requirements

  • Bachelor degree in technical theater, music business or other related field
  • At least 5 years of experience within the production field
  • Working knowledge of theater lighting systems, audio and video systems, and orchestras
  • Strong communications skills for negotiating with vendors and dealing with customer service issues
  • Ability to work with a broad spectrum of personalities and to exhibit patience and understanding
  • Ability to work as a team member with a positive, helpful attitude
  • Excellent computer skills; working knowledge of Microsoft Office products, CAD and building systems programs
  • Ability to multi-task and work under pressure in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends, depending on operational needs
  • Stellar organizational skills with attention to detail and ability to schedule priorities
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex technical manuals and specifications, legal regulations, codes and documents
  • Ability to create routine and complex procedures, reports and documents
  • Ability to translate technical terminology to lay terms

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all technical aspects of client events and concerts from planning stages through production control and supervision.
  • Ensure high quality and efficient production of events and concerts in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Oversee the production team’s scheduling and advancement for Concerts, Special Events, and Internal Events or Programming, including lighting, audio, video, and staging.
  • Supervise Technical Staff for Concerts, Special Events & Maintenance Activities.
  • Perform event and concert-related responsibilities such as stage management, lighting, audio, carpentry, or other required areas of support.
  • Supervise and book labor for concerts, events and maintenance activities.
  • Interpret technical riders and advance needs of touring productions.
  • Lead & participate in meetings pertaining to Production-related events.
  • Create stage plots using CAD Software and lead stage plot meetings.
  • Maintain technical equipment and facilities to ensure readiness of stages, support areas, and technical systems.
  • Oversee equipment inventories and coordinate regular equipment maintenance schedules.
  • Advise staff on equipment purchases, including research and obtaining quotes.
  • Adhere to technical production budgets and track departmental expenses.
  • Prepare event billing that accounts for labor and equipment charges.
  • Review and submit payrolls for all part-time technical staff.
  • Recruit, hire, train, and review the performance of all production crew members.
  • Ensure the safety of clients, guests, artists, and building staff by identifying and mitigating potential risks.
  • Assume life safety, crowd control and/or evacuation responsibility in the event of an emergency.
  • Drive box truck with manual transmission and forklift.
  • Perform other work-related duties as assigned.
