About The Position

Altana is the network for trusted trade. Our AI-powered product network empowers governments and businesses to build a more resilient and secure global economy while keeping trade flowing. The rules of global trade are being rewritten in real time. Supply chain transparency requirements are being rewritten; Forced labor enforcement, semiconductor export controls, tariff volatility, secure procurement for defense, allied coordination on economic security all require a new paradigm. Governments around the world are being asked to do something they've never been equipped to do: understand, monitor, and act on the full depth of global commerce, not just the edge of it. To do so they need a deep understanding of the entire production history and to collaborate with the private sector in new ways to ensure compliant trade is facilitated, while questionable activity is identified. The tools haven't kept pace with the mandate. Customs agencies still orient around transactions and rely on paper-based trusted trader audits, defense resilience was built for a different era of acquisition and slower innovation, and agencies don’t have the tooling nor data to do fact based policy research. The result is a widening gap between what governments need to know and what they can actually see — a gap that bad actors exploit, that allies can't easily close together, and that legitimate traders pay for in delays, uncertainty, and compliance overhead. Altana exists to close that gap. As Director of Product Management for Public Sector, you will lead the team defining how governments harness the power of the Altana network — not just to enforce at the border, but to understand the full complexity of global supply chains, collaborate with allies, and shape the trade policy and economic security decisions that will define the next era of globalization. You’ll oversee our three public sector product areas, and coordinate across the broader Altana organization to build our network. You've built innovative products before. You’ve worked in complex data driven environments with multiple competing incentives, and have exposure to policy, enforcement, or government operations. You’ll partner with our internal experts who are deeply familiar with the government operating cadence to help identify the product and roadmap. You're ready to build the system that changes that. This role sits at the center of one of the most consequential technology problems in the world. The team you lead will define how Altana becomes the operating infrastructure for trusted trade — the platform governments reach for when they need to know not just what crossed a border, but why it matters.

Requirements

• You understand how customs and border authorities actually work.
• You’ve spent 8+ years at the intersection of trade, customs enforcement, or border security technology — understanding the operational constraints, the data limitations, and the political realities from the inside.
• You know the difference between a manifest and an entry summary.
• You’ve seen how targeting and clearance decisions get made, and you understand why the systems that support them weren’t built for what’s being asked of them today.
• You think in networks, not transactions.
• You understand that trade is inherently a network system — and that the most consequential risks (evasion, illicit finance, undervaluation, COO laundering, supply chain manipulation) hide in the connections, not the individual records.
• You’re energized by graph-based analytics, AI-driven pattern detection, and the opportunity to give border officers a view of global commerce that’s never existed before.
• You can hold policy and product in your head at the same time.
• You’ve translated high-level mandates — forced labor enforcement, counternarcotics, trusted-trader modernization, revenue protection — into concrete product features.
• You know how to write a requirement an engineer can build, and how to explain a data architecture to a customs official who has never written a line of code.
• You build for many authorities, not one.
• You’re comfortable designing for agencies across developed and emerging economies — with different legal regimes, data-sovereignty requirements, languages, and levels of digital maturity — and finding the common platform beneath the local variation.
• You lead teams that build, not just describe.
• Your team defines system interfaces, drafts API specs, and prototypes workflows before production code is written.
• You hold yourself and your team to shipping things that work in the real world.
• You’re tech-enabled and obsessed with UX.
• You understand the plumbing — APIs, EDI, ETL/ELT, JSON — but you’re equally obsessed with the user experience.
• You hate clunky integration projects.
• You believe that even the most complex border workflows can be made to feel like magic with the right product thinking.
• 8+ years of experience in customs enforcement, border security technology, trade compliance, or trade facilitation
• 7+ years of product management experience, ideally spanning complex enterprise or government systems
• Direct experience with customs agency operations, trusted-trader/pre-clearance programs, or trade facilitation modernization initiatives — in the U.S. or internationally
• Familiarity with targeting systems, risk scoring, and enforcement workflow design in a customs, border, or law enforcement context
• Working knowledge of trade data structures: entry summaries, manifests, advance ship notices, HS/HTS classification, and country-of-origin determinations
• Experience with revenue protection (undervaluation, transshipment/COO laundering, HS misclassification) and/or enforcement missions (counternarcotics, forced labor, TBML, trade diversion) is a strong plus
• Experience delivering products across multiple countries or agencies, including emerging-market contexts, is a plus
• Prior experience with API-based integrations, data pipeline architecture, or enterprise system implementation

Nice To Haves

• Clearance is a plus, but not required. Some of our government work requires eligibility for a security clearance; eligibility for (or an existing) U.S. security clearance, or a prior successful Customs and Border Protection/DHS background investigation, is a strong plus.
• For engagements with international customs authorities, relevant local eligibility and the ability to work within each authority’s security requirements is what matters most.
• Eligibility for a U.S. security clearance, or an existing clearance / CBP background investigation, is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Redefine What Governments Can See: Own the product vision for Altana’s three public sector product areas; Customs and Border Management For Goods – modern tooling to collaborate with importers, understand trade, and enforce policy decisions at the border; Defense resilience and acquisition – defining a new era of defense procurement to foster innovation while maintaining secure and compliant supply chains; Economic Security and Policy – helping agencies analyze supply chain information to influence effective policy.
• Engage in how Altana is deployed to governments to meet them where they need us across their varied geographies, security and compliance boundaries.
• Ensure a unified platform and architecture to meet the needs of multiple governments.
• Work in collaboration with our other product areas to define and deliver our core mission sets in ways that work for public sector users.
• Modernize Customs and Border Management For Goods: Help government customers move beyond transaction oriented, repetitive work, and adversarial sampling. Build an agent native intelligence layer that lets border authorities collaborate, review and enforce policies with modern ML and AI. Build automated validation tools that close the "Tax Gap" — catching duty evasion, misdeclared origin, and undervaluation without slowing the flow of legitimate commerce. Own the integration and user workflow layer: how do we coexist with government systems and user flows to bridge the world to a new future. Integrate to make Altana feel like a native capability, not another integration project.
• Power Economic Security and Policy: Define a new product capability around economic security — giving government users the analytical tools to understand supply chain concentration, map strategic dependencies, model the impact of tariff and export control policy, and coordinate with allied governments on shared risk. Build the "Policy Workbench" that allows trade analysts, national security staff, and senior policymakers to move from raw supply chain data to defensible, evidence-based conclusions — about a sector, a country, a company, or a critical input. Work across the U.S. interagency and with Altana's international government customers to ensure the platform supports the full spectrum of economic security missions — from forced labor enforcement to critical mineral mapping to allied supply chain coordination. Manage a fused data environment that combines Altana’s unparalleled supply chain graph, and enables integration with confidential customer data to support policy analyses.
• Defense Resilience and Acquisition: Evolve supply chain in defense procurement from one-time design and awards to continuous compliance that fosters an innovation ecosystem. Create a marketplace for compliant components that enables defense manufacturers and governments to foster innovation, experimentation and rapid fielding of new capabilities. Build the tooling to enable defense contractors to see and manage their supply chains using Altana’s deep tier visibility, analysis and collaboration flows connecting component makers, manufacturers, and certification providers with the public sector.
• Lead a High-Impact Product Team: Set the product strategy and roadmap for these areas. Partner closely with engineering, design, data science, and government affairs to translate policy mandates and operational realities into product capabilities that work at the scale governments require. Be the connective tissue between Altana's enterprise product work and its government missions — ensuring that what enterprises submit and what governments receive tells a coherent, trusted story.
