About The Position

The Director of Portfolio Management provides strategic leadership and oversight of the Credit Union’s commercial loan portfolio, with primary accountability for portfolio risk management, credit quality, portfolio performance reporting, and consistent execution of sound credit administration practices. This role establishes portfolio management standards, strengthens monitoring and reporting routines, identifies emerging credit risk, and ensures portfolio activities remain aligned with the Credit Union’s risk appetite, lending policies, procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements. The Director serves as a senior subject matter expert and escalation resource for commercial portfolio risk, borrower performance trends, covenant compliance, servicing matters, renewals, modifications, and other ongoing credit administration activities. This position partners closely with Commercial Lending, Credit Administration, Special Assets, Loan Operations, and executive leadership to provide timely insight into portfolio health, support prudent credit decisions, and promote a high-performing, service-oriented culture focused on regulatory compliance, operational excellence, and an exceptional commercial lending experience.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, Economics, or a related field required.
Minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible commercial lending, commercial credit, portfolio management, credit administration, or related financial services experience, including at least seven (7) years focused on commercial portfolio management, credit analysis, underwriting, or ongoing credit risk management.
Minimum of two (2) years of leadership, supervisory, or team lead experience overseeing or guiding portfolio managers, credit analysts, underwriters, or related credit administration staff.
Demonstrated experience managing or overseeing commercial loan portfolios in a bank, credit union, or comparable financial institution environment, with responsibility for portfolio monitoring, borrower performance evaluation, covenant compliance, risk rating assessment, and credit quality management.
Experience working directly with senior management, Credit Administration, Commercial Lending, Loan Operations, internal audit, and other key stakeholders on portfolio management, credit risk, and process improvement matters.
Advanced knowledge of commercial lending, commercial credit administration, portfolio management, SBA lending programs, loan servicing practices, financial reporting requirements, covenant monitoring, and applicable credit, compliance, and regulatory requirements.
Strong ability to analyze borrower financial performance, cash flow, collateral, repayment capacity, risk ratings, portfolio trends, and emerging credit concerns, and to communicate findings and recommendations clearly to leadership, credit partners, and other stakeholders.
Excellent written, verbal, presentation, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with borrowers, guarantors, senior management, employees, vendors, auditors, and other internal or external business partners.
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, meet competing deadlines, produce accurate and high-quality work, and adapt to changing business needs in a fast-paced commercial lending environment.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, commercial lending platforms, portfolio reporting tools, and other technology used to support loan administration, monitoring, analysis, and reporting activities.
Strong leadership, collaboration, judgment, accountability, and service orientation, with the ability to support team development, promote consistent execution, and contribute to the overall success of the Credit Union.

Project and change leadership experience, including demonstrated success leading cross-functional initiatives, managing stakeholder relationships, implementing process improvements, strengthening reporting or workflow practices, and supporting change management within a financial services or commercial lending environment.
Experience underwriting, analyzing, or administering SBA-guaranteed commercial loans, including familiarity with SBA eligibility, documentation, servicing, and ongoing portfolio monitoring requirements.
Experience using Sageworks, Jack Henry, or comparable commercial lending, credit analysis, workflow, core processing, loan servicing, or portfolio management systems to support underwriting, portfolio monitoring, documentation tracking, reporting, and credit administration activities.
Experience supporting internal audits, external audits, regulatory examinations, third-party loan reviews, or credit review activities, including coordinating information requests, evaluating findings, and assisting with corrective action or process improvement efforts.
Working knowledge of SBA 7(a) and SBA 504 lending programs, including key program requirements, servicing expectations, eligibility considerations, and portfolio monitoring implications.
Master’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field, completion of a recognized banking school, or relevant advanced credit training preferred.

Responsibilities

Develops, implements, and continuously refines portfolio management strategies, monitoring routines, and reporting tools designed to proactively identify, measure, and manage credit risk within the Credit Union’s commercial loan portfolio.
Oversees portfolio-level risk monitoring, including analysis of concentrations, risk rating migration, watch list activity, industry exposure, collateral trends, geographic exposure, borrower performance indicators, and other emerging risk themes that may impact commercial portfolio quality or strategic decision-making.
Oversees the accuracy, integrity, and consistent use of portfolio management data, systems, dashboards, and reporting tools to support timely decision-making, executive reporting, audit readiness, and portfolio risk monitoring.
Provides timely portfolio performance updates to executive leadership, the Chief Credit Officer, and Credit Administration leadership regarding delinquency trends, risk rating migration, covenant compliance, collateral exceptions, documentation deficiencies, and other matters impacting commercial portfolio health.
Remains informed of economic conditions, industry trends, market developments, and regulatory changes that may affect borrower performance, portfolio concentrations, credit quality, or the Credit Union’s commercial lending risk profile.
Oversees and performs comprehensive financial analysis, cash flow analysis, collateral evaluation, and borrower performance reviews to assess ongoing creditworthiness, repayment capacity, risk rating accuracy, and continued alignment with approved credit terms.
Prepares, reviews, and presents clear credit summaries, recommendations, and supporting analysis for renewals, extensions, annual reviews, change-in-terms requests, site visits, covenant modifications, additions or releases of collateral, and other portfolio management actions requiring approval; exercises assigned approval authority or provides recommendations to the appropriate credit authority when applicable.
Reviews all loans subject to financial covenants, evaluates compliance with approved requirements, documents findings, and escalates exceptions or approval requests to the appropriate credit authority in accordance with policy.
Provides recommendations on financial reporting requirements, covenant testing standards and definitions, risk rating changes, waivers, and other credit administration requests submitted for approval to ensure each request is appropriately supported, preserves the Credit Union’s ability to monitor covenant compliance and analyze borrower performance, and does not unduly increase portfolio or credit risk.
Oversees annual review, site visit, ticklers, financial reporting, covenant compliance, and loan documentation monitoring processes to ensure required items are completed accurately, timely, and in accordance with policy and regulatory expectations.
Monitors past due reports, maturing loans, covenant exceptions, insurance expirations, collateral exceptions, and other portfolio servicing requirements; ensures timely follow-up, escalation, and resolution of identified issues.
Manages the modification/change-in-terms process for commercial loans, ensuring requests are appropriately documented, analyzed, approved, and completed in accordance with established procedures.
Communicates directly with borrowers, guarantors, internal business partners, and third parties to obtain required financial information, resolve documentation or servicing matters, and support effective relationship management throughout the life of the loan.
Resolves borrower and member escalations in a professional, timely, and service-oriented manner while balancing member experience, credit quality, policy requirements, and the Credit Union’s risk appetite.
Partners with Commercial Lending, Credit Administration, Loan Operations, Special Assets, and other internal stakeholders to support consistent credit administration, effective communication, and timely execution of portfolio management activities.
Ensures portfolio management activities comply with Commercial Loan Policy, SBA requirements, applicable state and federal laws, regulatory guidance, internal procedures, and sound credit administration practices.
Maintains comprehensive, current, and well-documented portfolio management procedures, job aids, and process controls to support consistent execution, audit readiness, regulatory compliance, and continuity of operations.
Coordinates third-party loan file reviews, audit requests, and portfolio review activities; evaluates findings, develops management responses, and leads corrective action or process improvement efforts as needed.
Assists with special assets, liquidations, ORE property, problem loan monitoring, and other elevated credit administration matters as requested.
Leads, coaches, and develops Portfolio Management staff by setting clear expectations, providing ongoing feedback, supporting professional development, and promoting accountability, efficiency, accuracy, and employee engagement.
Leads onboarding, training, and ongoing development programs for Portfolio Managers related to systems, credit administration processes, procedures, reporting tools, and portfolio management expectations.
Ensures quality and consistency of annual reviews, site visits, covenant reviews, credit summaries, reporting practices, and other portfolio management deliverables through education, coaching, review, and process discipline.
Develops training resources, reporting tools, workflow standards, communication routines, and regular team meeting structures to support consistent execution, effective communication, employee development, and continuous improvement across the department.
Performs all duties inherent to a managerial role, including hiring support, performance management, workload prioritization, staff development, resource planning, and fostering a high-performing culture aligned with the Credit Union’s mission and member service expectations.
