The Director of Photography is an accomplished team leader and expert in the photo industry, who possesses vast experience with the creative and technical tools used in image creation. This position focuses on the technical direction of image creation and post-production, as well as leadership for the following teams: photographers, digitechs, retouchers, photo assistants, image content, and image operations. This individual collaborates heavily with the Photo Art Director, and Director of Photo Production to develop the strategic and operational plans for the photo studio, under the direction of the Senior Director of Creative Services.

Requirements

  • 15+ years commercial photography experience with significant experience managing photography and post-production teams.
  • Extensive experience in many areas of commercial photography, including familiarity with video production and computer generated images.
  • Expert knowledge of cameras, lighting, and other commercial photo studio tools and equipment.
  • Expert level knowledge of Capture One software and tethered-shooting workflows.
  • Expert level knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and familiarity with Adobe design and video applications.
  • Expertise in computer networking and file management best practices.
  • Experience with operation and technical support of Macintosh and iOS devices in a corporate environment.
  • Experience with digital asset management software required.
  • A keen aesthetic derived from traditional education or training in the visual arts.
  • An aptitude for highly organized and systematic workflows
  • Ability to occasionally work overtime and be flexible with work schedule, including early mornings, evenings and weekends, in response to the production schedule and company needs.
  • Ability to travel occasionally for up to 2 weeks at a time.
  • A portfolio of relevant work is required for consideration.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership, mentoring, and direction to the Lead Photographer, Lead Photo Assistant, Post-Production Manager, Image Content Manager, Image Operations Manager, and their teams.
  • Provide technical photo direction to the photo studio in regards to lighting, composition, shooting workflows, retouching, archiving, metadata tagging, and image content curation.
  • Work closely with direct reports to ensure that style guides and standards for file management are followed consistently among team members.
  • Coordinate with the Photo Art Director regularly to review project team members and technical considerations to ensure that the creative direction for upcoming projects can be realized.
  • Own the budget for camera and lighting equipment, studio computer hardware/software, as well as grip tools and supplies.
  • Coordinate with the Director of Photo Production regularly to ensure that spending is within budget, and that product is tracked accurately through the photographic process by the photo team.
  • Assist team leads and managers in evaluating the skills and aptitudes of each member, ensuring that teams are adequately staffed and that team members are trained, mentored and given opportunities for advancement.
  • Evaluate the shooting schedule and scope of upcoming projects to determine if freelance or contract labor will be required. Develop and maintain relationships with freelance photographers and assistants, as well as 3rd party post-production service providers.
  • Lead by occasionally working directly on high-profile projects and demonstrating advanced photographic and retouching techniques for team members.
  • Oversee the Image Operations Team’s development and enhancement of the project, content and digital asset management systems utilized by the photo studio and other departments that interface with the photo studio or image assets.
  • Work closely with the Senior Director of Creative Services and company leaders to understand the technical requirements for image assets and photo studio systems, ensuring that the needs of users are met and that effective solutions are offered to problems.
  • Provide direction to the Image Content Team regarding company priorities and needs that relate to the curation of web site image assets.
  • Represent the photography studio in interdepartmental projects and major company initiatives as needed.
  • Perform other duties as required and assigned by manager and upper management.
  • Follow legal policies as directed.
