About The Position

The Director of Philanthropy implements and directs the organization's major gifts and donor relations strategy, including major gifts solicitation and cultivation, mid-level donor management, annual giving, and donor pipeline development. Manages a personal portfolio of major- and mid-level donors and prospects, sets the standard for moves management discipline across the team, and leads and develops the Development Manager. Serves as a strategic partner to the Managing Director of Development & Marketing and CEO in shaping long-term fundraising strategy and represents the philanthropy function to the board as needed.

Requirements

  • 7 or more years of progressive fundraising experience, including major gifts and staff leadership.
  • Demonstrated track record of closing major gifts and meeting revenue goals.
  • Bachelor's degree in nonprofit management, business, communications, or a related field.
  • Strong relationship-building and donor communication skills.

  • CFRE certification.
  • Experience with moves management and donor pipeline strategy in an education or workforce development nonprofit.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the major gifts strategy, including identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Personally manage a portfolio of major donors and prospects, modeling the standard for the team.
  • Set annual major gifts revenue targets and the cultivation plan required to meet them.
  • Lead and develop the Development Manager and any additional development staff.
  • Set goals, coach performance, and build the team's fundraising capacity.
  • Build the team's long-term fundraising capacity through hiring, coaching, and succession planning.
  • Set the strategy to grow and retain mid-level and donors.
  • Oversee segmentation and stewardship of the mid-level donor pipeline.
  • Identify mid-level donors with major-gift potential and build the cultivation path to advance them.
  • Maintain a disciplined moves management process across the donor portfolio.
  • Report on pipeline health and donor stage progression to organizational leadership.
  • Monitor stalled or at-risk donor relationships and direct corrective action before they lapse.
  • Set strategy and goals for annual giving campaigns and donor segmentation.
  • Hold the team accountable to annual giving revenue targets.
  • Test and refine appeal messaging and channels to improve year-over-year response rates.
  • Lead strategy to identify and qualify new donor prospects.
  • Ensure the donor database stays current and actionable in partnership with the Development Manager.
  • Use wealth screening and giving history to prioritize and qualify new donor prospects.
  • Partner with the Managing Director of Development & Marketing and CEO to shape long-term fundraising strategy.
  • Represent the philanthropy function to the board and external partners as needed.
  • Provide leadership and the board with a data-backed assessment of pipeline health and revenue risk.
