About The Position

The Director of Philanthropy, Major Gifts is responsible for identifying, cultivating, and soliciting donors and prospects for major, planned, capital, endowment, annual, or event support. This role involves working with Trustees or other volunteers to create and implement donor cultivation and engagement strategies. The position also partners with senior management to onboard, train, and mentor members of the development team. Key duties include developing activity plans and strategies for donor identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship, as well as meeting or exceeding budgeted revenue goals. The Director will research donors to assess philanthropic capacity, develop new leadership for National Jewish Trustees or volunteers, and secure donations from new sources. Donor relationships are cultivated through personal contact via telephone, electronic communication, and written materials, with follow-up to finalize donations. The role includes mentoring and training new development team members, providing guidance on portfolio development, and leading complex special projects. All donor contacts must be documented according to National Jewish Development procedures, and an active portfolio must be maintained according to best practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • A minimum of seven years recent and related fundraising experience required.

Responsibilities

  • Develops activity plans and implements overall strategies for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of donors and trustees.
  • Develops strategies to meet or exceed all budgeted revenue goals.
  • Assists in establishing and operating within the departmental budget.
  • Translates strategy into operational processes and provides input on strategy for the major gifts team.
  • Researches present and prospective donors to determine philanthropic capacity.
  • Develops new leadership to serve as National Jewish Trustees or volunteers.
  • Develops plans for securing donations from new sources.
  • Cultivates donor relationships through telephone, electronic, written (letters, invitations, applications, proposals, etc.) with high level of personal contact.
  • Follows-up to finalize all donations.
  • Mentors, trains, and assists with onboarding new members of the development team.
  • Provides guidance and feedback on strategies and processes to new staff on developing a successful portfolio.
  • Leads complex special projects that assist the development team in meeting their strategic goals.
  • Documents all donor contacts in compliance with National Jewish Development procedures.
  • Maintains active portfolio according to best practices.
