Director of People & Culture (Volunteer, Unpaid)

Greater IMPACT ChurchReading, PA
Hybrid

About The Position

The Director of People & Culture serves as the chief shepherd of our team member experience, volunteer lifecycle, and organizational health. Reporting directly to the Operations Pastor, this hybrid leadership role bridges operational alignment with pastoral care across our staff and volunteer teams. While much of the operational workflow (recruitment, onboarding, communications) is managed digitally, this leader will also be physically present in the Reading, PA area to connect in person with church leadership, foster local community, and support on-site ministry gatherings. You will lead volunteer talent acquisition (utilizing modern tools like Dover), guide new servant leaders through a seamless onboarding experience, and champion an uplifting, Christ-honoring culture.

Requirements

  • Local Residency Requirement: Must live within 10 miles of Reading, PA to attend in-person leadership syncs, local ministry events, and community engagements.
  • People & HR Leadership: 3+ years of experience in human resources, talent acquisition, people operations, volunteer coordination, or church/nonprofit leadership.
  • Recruitment & Systems Aptitude: Familiarity with (or quick ability to learn) applicant tracking systems (such as Dover), online job boards, and structured recruitment workflows.
  • Google Ecosystem Comfort: Proficiency working within Google Workspace (Gmail, Google Docs, Sheets, Drive, Meet) for team collaboration and documentation.
  • High Emotional Intelligence & Discretion: Exceptional interpersonal and pastoral communication skills; proven ability to navigate sensitive personnel conversations with grace, wisdom, and absolute confidentiality.
  • Heart for Ministry: A personal relationship with Jesus Christ and a deep alignment with the mission and values of Greater IMPACT Church, viewing servant leadership and people care as an act of worship.

Responsibilities

  • Volunteer Talent Acquisition & Pipeline Management: Lead end-to-end recruitment for open volunteer ministry roles; manage applicant pipelines in our ATS (Dover), screen candidates, and collaborate with the Operations Pastor and ministry directors on interviews and final placements.
  • Seamless Onboarding & Orientation: Partner closely with Operations and IT to lead the onboarding journey for new team members—ensuring smooth Google Workspace setup, Shared Drive access, ministry orientations, and role clarity.
  • Culture & Community Building: Cultivate a warm, collaborative, and spiritually vibrant team culture; coordinate virtual check-ins as well as occasional local in-person gatherings, leadership dinners, prayer meetups, and volunteer appreciation initiatives in the Reading area.
  • People Operations & Records: Maintain organized volunteer profiles, role descriptions, ministry guidelines, and team rosters in alignment with nonprofit and church best practices.
  • Volunteer Care & Pastoral Connection: Serve as an approachable, empathetic, and confidential advocate for team members—monitoring team health, preventing volunteer burnout, and connecting individuals with pastoral care when personal support or prayer is needed.
  • Operational Leadership Alignment: Meet regularly with the Operations Pastor to review team capacity, anticipate seasonal ministry needs, address staffing gaps, and support overall organizational planning.
